Ravens plan to keep adding players

The Baltimore Ravens know that, if they can win their division, they’ve got a fair shot at winning it all.

The problem is getting out of their division, given that the Steelers beat them three times last season.

And so Ravens G.M. Ozzie Newsome is doing what he can to improve the team.

Newsome says that, after an offseason that already has featured the arrival of cornerback Dominique Foxworth and center Matt Birk and the return of linebacker Ray Lewis, more moves are coming.

“We’re not done yet. I can tell you that,” Newsome told Jamison Hensley of the Baltimore Sun. “The phones are still hot.”

Newsome’s general plan is to address all areas of need via free agency before the draft, so that the team can take the best player available regardless of position when they exercise the 26th overall pick in the draft.

Hensley identifies receiver, offensive tackle, inside linebacker, kicker, tight end, and cornerback as the areas of need.

The team filled a huge need last week with the arrival of center Matt Birk.

Gil Brandt of NFL.com gushes to Hensley about the short-term upgrade from Jason Brown to Birk. “I think they got a really good player in Foxworth,” Brandt told Hensley. “Brown is a guy everybody is hot on, but [Birk] is a Pro Bowl player. I would say in the short term, Birk will be a better addition for the team than Brown.”

The Ravens agree; we’ve heard that the organization is blown away by Birk’s leadership skills and toughness, and they view Birk as a major upgrade from Brown — even though they realize that they’ll need to begin grooming someone to take over for Birk a few years down the road.
