Rutgers' depth at tailback behind Ray Rice became a source of concern yesterday when head coach Greg Schiano announced that back-up Kordell Young is out for the season after suffering a knee injury in Saturday's 59-0 rout of Norfolk State.

Young, a sophomore, had seven carries for 21 yards in a mop-up role on Saturday, but appeared to suffer the injury while rushing the punter on special teams in the first half. He returned in the second half to carry the ball from scrimmage.

"We did some further tests and it looks like he's going to need surgery on that knee," Schiano said. "So he will be out for the year."
Schiano said it was Young's left knee.

True freshman Mason Robinson, who saw his first college actionin the Norfolk State game, will likely move up to the No. 2 role at tailback. The former Somerville High star rushed for 58 yards on nine carries in late action of Saturday's romp.

he other option for Rutgers at the position is to have starting fullback Jack Corcoran play more of a Brian Leonard role, sometimes as the lone back, while carrying or catching passes. Corcoran has had reps at tailback with redshirt freshman Andres Morales as the fullback.

Because of the timing of the injury, Young will be able to take this season as a medical redshirt, leaving him with three years of eligibility.

I will be rooting for Mason Robinson because he's a local guy and he's from my area, but I wouldn't mind seeing Corocran lining up in the backfield. Guy's an absolutle beast.

More time for Mason. Not a bad thing at all. He's going to be special.

Wonder if Brooks will get PT, or if Schiano will preserve his redshirt season. Probably the latter.
