Alright little children, I’ve been suspended by Shape for the past 5 days, and I’ve been lickin my chops to get into this hip hop action…..i’ve been hearing a lot of wack ass recommendations when it comes to Mc’s, albums, and just straight good rap or hip hop. I’ve come to shed some light on the subject……..HERE’S A FREE LESSON!

    ALBUMS

    1. Mobb Deep – The Infamous
Don’t pay any attention to them signing with 50cent. You can’t blame them, they were putting out hip hop classics in the early 90’s, and weren’t making any money. This album is a beautifully hard collaboration between Prodigy’s unmatchable rhymes, and Havoc’s gritty beats. Hard gangster stuff…..5 stars…..can’t be beat!

    Best tracks:
    Cradle to the Grave
    Right Back At You
Eye For An Eye (Your Beef Is Mines)
    Survival Of The Fittest

    2. Notorious B.I.G.- Ready to Die
Shut up….you don’t know what you are talking about. Sit down and listen to Biggy melt rhymes together that will sit you on your ass. Clearly he had the ability to be the greatest MC of all time. He’s gotta get a 10 for flow and creativity, a true lyrical genius.

    Best tracks:
    Things Done Changed
    Gimme The Loot
    Warning
    Juicy
    Suicidal Thoughts
    The What

    3. GangStarr – Moment of Truth
This is strictly business and I guess we shouldn't be surprised, but Gang Starr comes correct with business as usual, instead of opting to sell out in order to get paid in full. You will be hard pressed to find a wack song on this record. Guru produces two cuts and rightly leaves the rest of the production up to the maestro, DJ Premier. This is the type of album that you throw in the deck and let run from beginning to end and back again.

    Best tracks:
    Above The Clouds
    The Militia
    The Rep Grows Bigga
    Betrayal
    You Know My Steez
    4. Ghostface Killer – Ironman
If you try to analyze it it want always make sense. This is Ghost's show not yours. It's more interesting to listen to Ghost than to understand him

    Best tracks:

    Wildflower
    Assasination Day
    Winter Warz
    Daytona 500
    Motherless Child

    5. Mobb Deep – Hell on Earth
I’m not being partial boys and girls….but if you are a white suburban youth and you think you like hip hop and you never listened to this album you should be shot. Prodigy and Havoc smack the second album out of the park. Same formula….different but great results. I have actually bought this album 3 times cause I keep losing it…worth the $$.

    Best tracks:

    Drop a Gem on 'Em
    Extortion
    Man Down
    Hell on Earth (Front Lines)

    6. The Roots - Illadelph Halflife
Jazzy beats…….slick witted poets……. all good. Philly never gets its props, but the City of Brotherly Love has pioneered its fair share of hip-hop innovations. The Roots became the first rap act to put together an impressive live show without samples and sequencers. On their third album, "illadelph halflife," the Roots capture in the studio the same chemistry between rhymes and live instruments that they've generated on stage. The album does include samples, but they're samples of the band's own exploratory jam sessions in Philadelphia.

    Best tracks:
    Respond/React
    Episodes
    The Adventures In Wonderland
    One Shine

    Some other songs worth downloading
    1. Cream – Wu Tang Clan
    2. Blackmoon – Buck’em Down (vinyl remix)
    3. Blackmoon – 2 Turntables and a Mic
    4. Jay-Z – D’Evils
    5. Gangstarr – Code of the Streets
    6. Raekwon – Incarcerated Scarfaces

Buddy, have you ever been to a club? Hip hop didn't change for white people. Hip hop changed because everything changes. The NBA changes, NFL changes. It's a phase. Right now the phase is making money, and that's what the artists are doing.

How the hell are you going to dance to Mobb Depp or Biggie? You need the variations in hip hop or it'll go back to being an underground genre. A genre that a lot of people don't like. You need a 50 cent, a Lil Jon, a Jermaine Dupri to make club hits. That's an aspect of hip hop. That's what make hip hop so sick. The variations, the differences. You can have serious tracks, party tracks, stupid tracks. Hip hop with just conscioucness will never come back. It'll never survive.

And you're insinuating that only white people go to clubs...uhm? Are you serious?

Jesus christ, you took that way too far and out of context.....Thats not what I was trying to say, but if you knew anything about anything you would know that hip hop is mainly listened to by white suburban youths....I said it is the new disco and sacrificing lyrics for dancable beats.....but thats not what i'm writing about, I took that last little bit out just for you...I just wanted to list some good albums and songs..THATS IT!

Those are all great albums and songs. The mainstream hip hop these days is garbage. Out here in SoCal one of the main reasons they play a lot of Houston artists is because they hired a new production manager from Houston, Rick Scorpio. Once he came on board to 106.5 he brought a new format over and introduced the Houston music scheme to the LA market.

hiphop is hiphop. Its the music industry the takes all the catchy lyrics, fashion, and gangsta **** and makes it commercial..Hiphop is a way of expression and a way of living. everyone has an opinion. everyone has a flavor they prefer.

There's still plenty of good hip hop coming out. You just can't rely on mainstream media outlets to hear any of it.
