Anyone SO OLD that they participated on the old Usenet forum rec.sport.basketball.pro in the early-to-mid 90s? Some notable figures that I remember from those days: Roy Navarre AKA "pinhead" - a HUGE Orlando Magic/Shaq fan who was sort of the HCP of the forum, only EVEN MORE obnoxious. Alan Sepinwall - a Knicks fan who would not shut up about being a student at Penn. Has gone on to carve out a career writing about movies. Todd Trubey - used to do a yearly "All-Trube Team" where he named his favorite/most notable posters on the forum. Jazzy J - the stats guy. Probably went on to a well-paid career in some front office. Cos (was that his name?) - a super-obnoxious (without being funny) fan of the Payton/Kemp Sonics. When they got beaten in the first round by the Mutombo Nuggets, it was like Christmas and everyone on the whole forum just piled on him. Then there was a guy whose first name was Bobby who was like the barfo of the forum - always ready with perfectly formed quips. Anyone else old enough that they participated but not so old that they're so senile they've forgotten everything? Pretty sure Ed O. was on there. The other thing they did was hold yearly mock drafts, where members volunteered to be GMs of a real team and they had to produce a report about the team and then make the pick for that team.
Yes, I made those picks. Good value relative to where they were actually picked (with Jackson going at #10 and Telfair at #13, I got 13 picks of value) and there just weren't a ton of very good players picked in the last 2/3 of that round, so I don't feel too bad. I think I nabbed Jacque Vaughan one year in a draft, too. I joined usenet in... 1993, maybe? I think pinhead is one of the earliest, most effective, trolls the Internet produced, personally.
I read it, but didn't post (I don't think). Back then I mostly posted in the nerd channels, and on Blazers List Talk (BLT).
