Red Sox thump Yanks, take first all alone

For one tense moment at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday night, the seven-run bulge the Red Sox held earlier in the contest no longer mattered.

The bases were loaded with just one out in the bottom of the sixth, Boston's lead now down to a mere three runs. With one quick flick of his wrists, Derek Jeter could have had himself another rivalry moment -- one that would have sent deafening roars throughout the Stadium.

But Alfredo Aceves stared in at his former teammate and never blinked, inducing a 5-4-3 double play that was pivotal to the Red Sox holding on for an 11-6 victory over the Yankees.

"He's a good guy," Aceves said of the Yankees' captain. "I played with him a couple years, three years. He's not different than me. We're all the same. We all have two eyes, two ears, a mouth, two legs."

In 2009, Aceves and Jeter were teammates during a World Series championship season. Aceves hopes to get back on that stage this season, at the expense of his former 'mate.

What was the approach in this key sequence?

"We threw it past -- a wild pitch first," said Aceves. "Throw to home [from catcher Jason Varitek]. [Brett] Gardner didn't run. I don't know why. 3-1, I come in with a four-seam fastball. After that, I say, 'Cambio, cambio' [changeup], and he rolled over."

With the win, the Red Sox moved back into sole possession of first place in the American League East, taking a one-game lead over their rivals.

Boston can thank its success against the Bronx Bombers as a pivotal reason for being in first place. The Sox are 7-1 against the Yankees on the season and have taken the last six, five of which have come on Bronx turf.
