"Brendan Smith showed hints of the NHL defenseman he can become Tuesday as the Red Wings wrapped up training camp.

Smith opened the scoring with a nice slap shot past Jimmy Howard as Red beat White, 5-3, at Centre Ice Arena. Smith, 21, was the 27th pick overall in 2007.

"He's a confident, good player," coach Mike Babcock said. "He has the ability to be a game-breaker. Game-breakers have a tendency to want to break the game all the time. As you become a pro, you realize ... lots of shifts nothing happens and you wait for opportunity and then you take advantage. And then you don't get yourself into trouble because you're not forcing things."

Smith is off to play with Grand Rapids in the American Hockey League after two seasons at Wisconsin. This was his first Wings training camp.

"It's been a great experience," Smith said. "Just the speed and the skill of the guys around here, and how everybody holds themselves. They're all professionals. Just watching them, taking some tips, I think that's been the biggest thing.""
