"Chris Osgood gave up five goals on 27 shots as the Red Wings lose their exhibition opener to the Penguins, 5-1, tonight in Pittsburgh. Detroit lost a couple of players during the game due to injury, Johan Franzen and Derek Meech.

Pittsburgh got on the board just 1:21 into the game when Mike Comrie (Michigan) beat Osgood with a wrist shot. Then at 7:29 of the first, Sidney Crosby's wrist shot found the back of the net. At 11:45 of the period, Ryan Craig's slap shot made it 3-0.

There were a couple of fights in the first period. Red Wings forward Aaron Downey and Pittsburgh's Jesse Boulerice hooked up at the 13:29 mark. Then, after Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik committed a kneeing penalty at 18:17 on Franzen. Orpik and Todd Bertuzzi went at it. Bertuzzi was also assessed an instigator penalty and a 10-minute misconduct. Orpik was giving a game misconduct penalty.

Franzen suffered a charley horse on the play. Wings announcer Ken Kal reported Franzen's charley horse on WXYT-AM (1270) and also said that Wings defenseman Derek Meech, who is trying to make the team as the seventh defenseman, was shaken up with a head injury and will miss the rest of the game.

"We think more of his thigh, but we'll get him checked out," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We hope he'd going to be fine."

Detroit finally scored in the second period when Ruslan Salei scored off passes from Mattias Ritola and Valtteri Filppula. But the Penguins answered with two more goals -- one from Brett Sterling (13:28) and another from Craig (15:06)."
