Referee suspended 3 games <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">NEW YORK -- The NBA acknowledged Thursday there was an officiating mistake in the final minute of the Los Angeles Lakers' 112-111 victory over the host Denver Nuggets and suspended the official. With the Nuggets leading Wednesday night's game 111-109, a shot by Denver's Andre Miller appeared to brush the rim and barely beat the shot clock. Teammate Carmelo Anthony got the rebound, but the whistle blew for a shot-clock violation. The officials huddled and ruled it was an inadvertent whistle, resulting in a jump ball. The Lakers won the tip, leading to Kareem Rush's winning 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds left. But NBA senior VP Stu Jackson said Thursday that there shouldn't have been a whistle on the play. "That call was incorrect because the ball, in fact, hit the rim," Jackson said. "This was an unfortunate call at a highly critical point in the game, and we very much regret the error." The National Basketball Referees Association said the league suspended referee Michael Henderson for three games and summoned him to New York for a meeting with league officials.</div> More here. The NBA is finally starting to punish these horrible ref's which have taken it upon themselves to decide the outcome of a game instead of letting the players do it. Good job Stu Jackson and the rest of the NBA for taking action instead of just the usual "We're sorry, screw you." You can be guaranteed that in the future there will be a far less amount of last minute BS calls like what has been happening very often lately because refs will know that they can and WILL be punished for severely messing up. Now if only there was a replay/challenge system, this whole thing would have been prevented, both teams would have been happy, and a ref would not have been suspended for the call he made.
I hate it when refs influence the outcome in game. If you even have to mention the refs really, besides saying they did a good job, then they probably did a bad job. The refs should not really be noticed if they're calling the game well. The call was wack and he should've gotten that. If players get fined for kicking a ball, then refs should get punishment for horrible calls.
This is good news, finally refs are getting what they deserve. This is absolutley FANTASTIC for the game. This will result in the fine tuning in refs and sharpen their calls. There has been alot of bad decisions this year, even in the all star game with Kobe clearly making a three, and the refs didnt see it to more serious games ,were once Garnett travelled and they let it go.This all has to stop and hopefully this is the starting point.Refs will be more careful now.
Refereeing has been disgusting throughout the season, we have heard a lot of NBA players complaining about officiating....... and players dont really have freedom anyways once they criticize a ref, guess what you get fined
No, I don't think this suspension is that tough for a ref. They need to be fined, that'll definitely lead to better calls. Hopefully this won't happen in the playoffs when the each call really counts. I feel bad for the Nuggets, only becasue they lost unfairly to the Lakers. The Lakers always seem to get good calls.
Wow, are any of you guys watching the Raptors @ Celtics game on ESPN right now? All of the refs in that game have their referee uniforms turned inside out as a protest to this 3 game suspension and the NBA logo on the front shows up as just a white patch so you can't see the logo. Also, speaking of fines, what is the average salary of an NBA ref? I've always thought they made a regular 50k salary or something along those lines, so they wouldn't be able to afford the same high dollar fines the NBA likes to hand out to players.

It was also a mistake, mistakes can happen, it's just very unfortunate it happened at the end of the game. If that had happened in the 1st quarter or somethign, it wouldn't have mattered. Refs have been complained about though, multiple times.

I actually think that the NBA refs are pretty decent...although the consequences were appropriate for the actions, atleast the NBA is actually 1) admitting its mistake, and 2) doing something about it...but I think the NBA has some pretty good refs for the most part...

It makes me want to be a ref. I dont think suspension is that bad a punishment. i mean its cool how thye get paid to watch games very carefully and up close and even get the summer off. They even can determine the outcome of games at times. Oh yeah, and they even get paid secretly to call a game a certain way... ahem lakers.
Regardless of what happened with the ref that is suspended, there is a major situation going on with all the referees tonight. Every referee in every game is wearing their uniform inside out in protest. Stu Jackson said that any referee that particpated in this would recieve discpilinary consequences. I wonder what he will do since he can't suspend every ref. Im expecting a fine however what if NBRA strikes in protest to these fines as well? Stu Jackson is now "in the spotlight".
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TMac_OwNz:</div><div class="quote_post">Aren't they suppose to review a call that is questionable and could change the game's final score?</div> That only applies to a shot at the buzzer at the end of a quarter. The play in question is unreviewable since it was not a shot at the buzzer.

It looks like I'm against the majorty...I agree with the ref's complaints....I understand the idea of accountability etc etc but come on, these guys are doing the best job they can...If the league feels a certain ref is consistantly making mistakes, then there is reason for termination....but to suspend someone for making one mistake (in a line of work where mistakes are inevitable) is beyond me...This is ridiculous, NBA refs have made worst calls without punishment.... btw, I'm a guy who complains a lot about officiating...but this is more about principle and Employers abusing their employees...

That is very un-professional to suspend a ref for making one mistake. I hate NBA officiating as well, but that is just wrong. That is an embarassing momment for a ref, I didn't even know you could suspend them. And believe it, their have been calls just as worst that have decided games, just not at the end like that.
