"What scissors were to Samson, what British Petroleum was to water, Baltimore is to the Broncos. The Broncos stink here.

They stunk it up again Sunday while losing to the Baltimore Ravens, 31-17 on a bright-blue early October afternoon at M&T Bank Stadium.

Every time the Broncos play here, they don't just lose, they get thrashed.

Which is too bad, because it's such a nice city, otherwise.

It has the Chesapeake Bay Inner Harbor and all its boats, shops and restaurants. It has a vibrant downtown that stays open 2 4/7. It has a rich history of poets, war heroes and Babe Ruth as a baby. And it has a beautiful football stadium.

It's just not a good place for the Broncos to play.

"I've noticed," said Broncos defensive end Justin Bannan, who played the past four seasons with the Ravens and now knows what it's like to be on the wrong side of scrimmage. "I think with those guys you've got to really jump on them quick. It's one of those teams that really thrive on emotion. They thrive on momentum. Once they make a couple plays early, they just let it go. And then it gets hard to overcome that."

Bannan was talking about the Ravens in general, but his observation could have been used to specifically describe Baltimore middle linebacker Ray Lewis. Has a anyone ever played with more emotion than Lewis?

"That team embodies his personality," Bannan said. "He runs the show. It's Ray's team, no doubt about it."

Since the first Cleveland Browns' franchise became the Baltimore Ravens, the Broncos have gone 0-5 here, a skid that started with a 21-3 playoff loss in 2000. Lewis was there to help deliver the whipping every time.

None of the games have been close — the average margin of defeat here has been a whopping 17.2 points.

"I'm sorry," Ravens nose tackle Haloti Ngata said. "It's good for us, though. I think it's tough for any team to come in here.""
