    Oliver Sacks, the British neurologist and writer whose eloquent stories about the brain explored what it means to be human, died Sunday of skin cancer that spread to his liver, at the age of 82. But his contributions to our understanding of the mind live on.

    His case studies of patients with rare brain disorders revealed the human side of mental illness and imbued his readers with a sense of wonder rarely found in dry scientific prose.

    Here are just a few of the ways Sacks changed the way we view the mind.
