What do you think about the (mostly) Republican attempt to nix the repealing of DADT (don't ask, don't tell)?

I think it's typical chicken shit behavior by angry, bigoted and ignorant out of touch people.

I know there were 60 votes to pass the repeal, but Reid deliberately chose a procedure/process that assured its failure.

    For political purposes.

With 59 votes in the senate, they knew they could pass the uber expensive and unpopular health care bill. Yet this time they didn't count the votes? Oh yeah, they did count the votes as they always do. They knew the outcome before it was brought up for the vote.

Collins, Snowe Hesitate to Support Reid’s Plan for DREAM Act and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs 60 votes to overcome a Republican filibuster on the defense authorization bill, which some senators have threatened to block because Reid plans to attach to the DREAM Act and a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Centrist Republican senators like Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine are considered crucial to this effort — but they have indicated they may be unwilling to cross the aisle during today’s vote.

During a floor speech today, Collins said she is in a tough position: She supports a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, but opposes Reid’s decision to allow only two amendments to the defense authorization bill. Reid said he would limit amendments to three: a repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell; the DREAM Act; and an amendment to ban the practice of placing “secret holds” on presidential nominees.

“I will defend the right of my colleagues to offer amendments on this issue and other issues that are being brought up in connection with the defense authorization bill,” Collins said. “They need to have a civil, fair and open debate on the Senate floor.”

Why not just vote on the bill on its own merits. Why attach illegal amnesty to it?

    For two reasons:
    1) They counted the votes and new it would fail. They intend to use it as a campaign issue.
    2) They want to get out of town early so they can campaign longer.

I think DADT should be repealed. There's nothing wrong with being gay and if a serviceperson wishes to be out of the closet, it's no skin off my nose. We ask these people to serve with honor; being honest about who you are and true to yourself is the very definition of honor.

Unfortunately, there is not a drop of honor in either party in Washington.

Have there been in depth studies on the effects of repealing DADT?

Surely there will be some sort of effect. Measurable even. Wonder if its been looked at.

Hmm, does the DOD do any research? I think they might. I suspect they've studied it twelve ways to Sunday.

they don't really have a say in the matter. It'd be important to gain more support if a study showed positive impact, not just anecdotal "soldier reactions".

I can't figure out what you are trying to say here. Where did anecdotal "soldier reactions" come from?

so...if the democrats didn't add all this illegal alien shit to the DADT, this would have been repealed.

so...julius...are the democrats the "typical chicken shit behavior by angry, bigoted and ignorant out of touch people. "????

real and current studies on the impact of allowing gays to serve openly in the military. most of the stuff on the news are various people giving anecdotal accounts on how gays can serve in the military with little to no negative effects. They should conduct studies that conclusively prove that. there seems to be a study from the APA...anything else?

Yes, of course what's on the news is anecdotal. That's what the news is these days.
That has nothing to do with whether they've done research on the subject.

Or if it was presented as a straight majority vote, rather than using the procedural method that requires a 2/3 majority vote to pass.

The reality of it is that if DADT were repealed and gays were allowed to serve openly, there would be incidents of prejudice and violence in the military. Change happens. The same things occurred when blacks were integrated into the military.
