The deal is expected to become official on Friday. With Varitek out four to six weeks after undergoing left knee surgery on Thursday, Boston has a big void behind the plate. Doug Mirabelli, a solid defensive catcher but just a .185 hitter in 47 games, was expected to play the bulk of the games in place of Varitek.Lopez, a 14-year veteran in the final year of his contract, is batting .265 with eight homers and 31 RBI in 76 games for Baltimore. The Red Sox (64-42) started the day in a first-place tie with the New York Yankees in the American League East Division.</div>http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/base...dsox/index.html
