Women all over Portland breathe a sigh of relief. In all seriousness, the most (only?) interesting note here--Oden becomes the first #1 pick not to receive a contract extension since...Kwame Brown. Make of that what you will.
Judging by his infamous photo, Greg is not in need of an extension. ZING POW! (somebody had to post it)
Wrong! He is in need of a leg extension to make them even. There definetly going to want to resign him after that, so they might as well do it now while the price's low. it won't last long!
I think it's the right move, and I hope that Greg doesn't take it personally because it's a business decision. The team would look stupid to extend him at this moment.
Cho's first move: Trading Jerryd Bayless for a decent chance at a top ten pick Cho's second move: Letting the market decide the value of Greg Oden and refusing to bid against yourself Solid.
I'm still not sold on the Bayless trade, but I think is the right move with Oden, so he gets a on that from me.
I don't think you can really call it a "toxic" contract because that would mean that it's front loaded, and that kind of tactic wouldn't work on PA. We need a different term for someone offering Oden a disingenuous offer with the intention of making us overpay for him.
Well that will set his value. What if a cap wealthy team offered him max money? Say...the nets. Or mavs.
We could have locked him up cheap. Only way this saves blazers money if Oden has another injury not career ending
You don't know that.... are you sure they didn't make him some low offers and his agent refused? I'm sure Oden would probably rather wait until after the season too (unless he thinks that he won't be healthy this year, in which case he would probably take the money).
In hindsight the first mistake was drafting him over Durant. The second is in not extending him while we have no competition. There is simply no possibility that we don't pay massively more to keep him later. Trading him for a comparable star is the only way for the Blazers to not end up chumps.
IMO, the highest offer the blazers give right now is the lowest offer next summer when the other teams, not the blazers, negotiate his "fair market value". You have a major market team with no real options and cap space who offers him max money...a place like say NY Knicks or whatever.
