HOUSTON -- The Houston Rockets are close to a deal that would add veteran center Dikembe Mutombo as the backup to Yao Ming, a television station reported Thursday

The Rockets would send Eric Piatkowski, Adrian Griffin and Mike Wilks to the Chicago Bulls, Houston television station KRIV said in a report citing anonymous NBA sources.

The deal, which could be done as early as next week, needs the approval of Bulls ownership and the NBA, the station said.

Rockets general manager Carroll Dawson declined comment.

This was expected. Griffen is a solid player, but didn't get much PT, and minutes should be taken over by Nachbar.

Great, I am very excited about the deal. Clearing 3 useless guys for a much needed Backup Center.

I like the trade. This would open up minutes for Nachbar and Gaines. Pike wasn't going to play under Van Gundy, and Griffin would've spent most of the season on the IR anyways. This trade gets rid of unusable pieces and will get us a valuable shot-blocker in return.

Great trade for both teams, IMO. Griffin is a solid veteran who can give us good defensive pressure. Piatowski will also be a great addition with his perimeter shooting. Mike Wilks isnt terrible, but we would probably waive him and you guys would resign him. Good trade overall.

The point of trading him would be to clear up the jam at the PG spot, and I doubt that we'd want him back to be a 4th PG. I think he's better than Jannero Pargo though, so the Bulls should probably keep him. [IMG]

I think Jannero is better. Pargo was putting up 13 and 3 at the end of the season. We need his shooting, so he'll probably stay. [IMG]

great trade for the Rockets.. clearing out 3 players who didn't play a whole lot last year for a much-needed backup to Yao, and they also clear 2 roster spots for additional free agent signings..

Well, in terms of cap-room, this didnt do to much. We still havent used our TE, which is a little odd to me. Good pick-up, I wished Chandler coulda been involved, but Mutumbo is still a great player. We still havent got all the pieces to a Championship team, IMO. Still, we will be better than last year.. i think.. i hope..

Wait, the deal hasn't gone through, right? This is all based on some television report, and who knows how accurate that is. "Close" to making a deal could mean anything.

Nah. The TE is a trade exception, which can only be used to cover up the salary gap in trades. I think we'd get around to using it in the future when another trade will be in place, but not now.

you can't combine your trade exception with player salaries to make a deal work. you can either use it to pick up a player off waivers, or trade for a player straight up and not give anything in return.

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm

tho reading this site, they may have already used their trade exception :

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">A good example of this occurred in 2004 when Houston traded Steve Francis, Cuttino Mobley and Kelvin Cato to Orlando for Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Tyronn Lue and Reece Gaines. As a single trade, this would not have netted a trade exception since multiple players were moving each way. However, Houston was able to reorganize the trade into three separate, simultaneous trades. In one trade, they acquired McGrady and Gaines for Mobley and Cato. In another trade, they acquired Howard and Lue with an existing trade exception from their earlier Glen Rice trade. That left them trading Francis essentially by himself for nothing, which generated a trade exception in the amount of Francis' base year value. From Orlando's perspective, it was a single three-for-four trade.</div>

This is a great trade. Mutombo should bring a lot to this team as a backup to Yao. He'll contribute a lot on defense and shot blocking. And we got him for almost nothing. I will be upset is this trade doesn't go down.

If Mutombo can play defense the way he did on Duncan in the Finals of 2003, he will be a very valuable asset. His size, long arms, and shotblocking ability will be able to anchor the rockets defense when Yao takes a seat.

I still think rockets may need to sign one more center, like Keon Clark incase Mutombo is injured. I have a feeling that the Rockets right now are planning on playing Taylor as Center if Mutombo is injured. Taylor is actually very big and strong for a power forward. He's listed at 255lbs. Wallace is listed at 240.

    Nice aquisition by the Rockets.
latest reports from ESPN assure that the trade is going down, however, the backage sent to the Bulls would execlude Mike Wilks.

Taylor is no where near as great as Ben Wallace. Period. Taylor just is not fit for playing center. Can anyone see him going against the west's toughest backup centers? However, I have to admit that he is a great bench player that can contribute alot in a short amount of time which is a valuable asset for the Rockets to have.

I thought Griffin was a good player. Sad to se him get traded.

Otherwise, I like this trade though. Glad the Center spot now has a very reliable back-up player.

I think that Griffin has been waved by the Bulls. And the Rockets have to pay out his salary.

I agree that Taylor isn't suited for playing Center, but maybe he can pull it off for a few minutes every game, if the rockets switch to a smallball game. There pretty much is only Tim Duncan to worry about at Center.

Deke is very old,but I think he could still give you a solid amount of RPG and maybe a block or two a game, but another good reason to bring him in is because he could be a nice metor to Yao along with Ewing, those two center are two of the best centers of all time, that will deffiantly rub off positivley on Yao.
