Republicans have characterized Obama’s executive actions preventing gun violence as “a power grab,”, pledged to introduce legislation nullifying his orders, and even floated impeaching the President for allegedly overstepping his Constitutional powers. On Wednesday night, former Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey offered a reality check for alarmed conservatives. Appearing on Fox News’ Hannity, Mukasey clarified that no court would find Obama’s gun violence prevention initiatives unconstitutional:
I don't think he overstepped his constitutional powers either. However, it is rather evil to nationalize health care and then ask doctors to spy on the citizens and report their findings to the government. I also think the press is absolutely misleading. Some republicans fired a shot across Obama's bow - try to BAN any weapons outright by executive order and they'd consider impeachment (as a last resort). And Mukasey did not address that scenario, since it never happened.
