Blazers scout Dennis Johnson, who was deposed as Clippers interim coach last offseason, was nosing around Boston last week. After the abrupt resignation of Jim O'Brien, there's no question whom the bad guy is in Boston--team president Danny Ainge. Ainge needs a P.R. victory, and what better way to get one than by giving Johnson--who is an able coach, mind you--the reins? A source close to Johnson says Johnson is not so sure he'll be offered the job. . . Full Article: http://www.foxsports.com/content/view?contentId=2106920
From a P.R. aspect, I agree that this would be a good move. DJ has always been a fan favorite. But judging from his handling of the clippers (and I understand it wasn't an easy situation), I have my doubts about DJ as a NBA coach.
DJ would be better as a trainer in my opinion. He has a lot to teach and is undoubtly a great basketball mind. But I think he'd be better off teaching moves and tactics for overall rather then against individual teams and players, meaning at the spot. Good player, good person. Good coach, maybe, we'd have to see. He'd have a pretty bad team at his disposal afterall. He looks like a on the spot thinker though. I'd be willing to give him a chance if I owned the Celtics.
I didn't think the Celtics were interested in hiring another coach until the offseason...? No question, though, this might help some fans forgive Ainge. He'll need a lot more than hiring DJ for me to like him, that's all I know.
