Recovering knee forces Richardson to sit out camp

The arthroscopic surgery Warriors guard Jason Richardson had on his left knee Aug. 22 will keep him out of training camp, which runs today through Oct. 11 at the Warriors' practice facility in Oakland.

``I probably won't be able to play until the last two preseason games,'' Richardson said Monday at the team's media day. ``That's fine with me.''

Richardson had been expected to be ready for camp.

He ran full-bore on the treadmill for the first time Monday. He said he will continue strengthening his knee until he is cleared to practice. When he is, he said, he'd need up to three weeks to get into game shape.

``I haven't been on the court,'' Richardson said. ``I haven't touched a ball in a over a month, two months. . . . Right now, I'm just trying to get back on the court.''

? Richardson recounted how he felt upon hearing that Don Nelson had been hired as Warriors coach: ``It was a good thing because I feel like I need, and not just me but the guys who've been here for a while . . . we need to have a true veteran coach.''

The same sentiment was expressed by Richardson's teammates.

``Everybody wants to be here,'' third-year post player Andris Biedrins said. ``Everybody now will respect Coach. . . . He has his own rules, his own system and he will follow that system no matter what. ''

Said forward Troy Murphy: ``We've only had just the one meeting (Monday) morning, but you can tell Coach Nelson knows what has to go on and exactly what he wants done and what way he wants to do it.''

? Baron Davis estimated he was down to about 215 pounds and said he wanted to get down to 208 or 210 for the season. His listed weight was 223 last season.

? Guard Monta Ellis, still resting the right knee he bruised during summer league in July, will miss the first couple of practices, according to a team release.

? The Warriors signed swingman Matt Barnes, forward Dijon Thompson and point guard Anthony Roberson.

Why does Baron still look heavier than Jrich? LOL.

Maybe he lost the weight off his butt and thighs.

Well maybe he could just practice free throws, but I bet he still can't dribble the clock out in a blowout game without it going off his foot to the other team.

It never stopped Nellie from giving Mitch the ball with the clock running down. As many times as Mitch would dribble off of his foot, he'd still go back to him

I think I was too young to remember how bad of a ballhandler he was in the beginning. Couldn't be that bad if he was on his way to being a franchise shooting guard. Maybe Jrich could improve, but to me he's not as quick with the ball as Mitch, maybe? Jrich can handle some, but to me, he's not that quick. I think Ray Allen and Michael Redd and Kobe Bryant are quick.
