A strained left hamstring is preventing him from taking a more active role.

Richardson was forced to the sideline two days into training camp but came back in a hurry. It won't happen again. The lack of patience was perhaps a contributing factor when he had a relapse Sunday.

"I'm a little sore," he said after watching the Knicks practice yesterday at the MSG training facility. "We gotta make sure we take some time and get it right, so when I do come back there won't be any more setbacks."

A similar injury ruined last season for Penny Hardaway.

"The one thing he told me was you gotta make sure you get it right, give it the time it needs so it doesn't keep coming back to haunt you," Richardson said. "I just want to make sure I do the proper thing, so when I come back I stay there."

So far, three potential starters have missed valuable practice time.

Knicks coach Larry Brown isn't showing concern yet. He actually sees a benefit as long as the walking wounded follow along.

"I think they're standing on the side listening and learning," Brown said. "And a lot of the things we're talking about, I think they're aware of. So I look at it as the young guys are getting a lot more experience than they would ordinarily, and hopefully it will speed up their adjustment.

"Hopefully it will end soon. For at least two games, you'd like to have your group there."

Unlike past seasons, when injuries disrupted the introductory phase, nobody sees a long-term problem developing.

"I think guys will get healthy and get on the court eventually," Stephon Marbury said. "When it's preseason, you've always got bumps and bruises because everybody's getting back into the flow again.''</div>
