John Canzano @JohnCanzanoBFT Rick Carlisle as the next Blazers coach? Some of you are wondering if it could happen, and it's not crazy talk
Because this time he'd be in charge. But, if you're a coach who would you rather work under Cuban, or Allen? No brainer.
I agree with you, but I do think it is funny how much winning a title seemed to change a lot of the thoughts on Cuban. Seemed like a year or two before, he was being criticized heavily by their fans, of being too meddlesome with player decisions and such. Stuff we complain about with Paul.
I think he's always been thought of as an owner who will do anything to appease his team/coaches. Almost a friend more than an owner. His biggest knock has been growing too close with guys and having trouble parting with them.
You guys underestimate Allen. Anyway, back when Cheeks was fired I liked McMillan as a candidate, and I also liked Carlisle. This was on the ESPN board. Carlisle had a reputation as being too tough on his players, which in the years and teams since, he has managed to lose. He learned to hide his true evil inner nature. Anyway, yeah, he'd be good! We can't do any better than that.
So is Carlisle's contract up in Dallas this summer? How do we plan on getting him? I know Allen wouldn't mind paying top dollar for a good coach. But would Carlisle really want to leave Dallas? Also, would this depend on D. Will leaving NJ? If he stays, then Dallas doesn't have much of a chance to win. That could mean Carlisle would want a better gig.
Does anyone know whether an NBA team has ever hired away a head coach from another team, like, involuntarily? That's what I thought. It's a brotherhood of owners.
Involuntarily? Like, the coach does not want to leave Team A and Team A wants to keep him but Team B insists on hiring the coach anyway? I'm sure that's illegal in any profession. Or do you mean hire a coach under contract with another team? Also would be illegal, unless the team holding his contract fires him. They still have to pay off the money but the coach can seek another position.
The very few times the coach terminates without being fired, he always says he's retiring. Has one ever resigned and admitted that he intends to immediately seek another NBA head coaching job? Has one ever quit with the next job already lined up? I don't think so, for either question.
Don't know about "unretiring" - isn't that what Phil Jackson did? If a coach has a gig lined up there could be tampering charges. Is that the correct term? I know the TWolves got in trouble over Joe Smith in that situation and imagine coaches under contract would have the same restrictions.
Good one, right in front of our faces. He was dissatisfied with the ownership's dying financial condition and dwindling player talent level, and announced he wouldn't renew his contract. So teams talked to him and he went for the owner who was the opposite of the owner he had. Sonic ownership had publicly considered firing him a year earlier. So we kind of stole him, but I was looking for a more blatant example. That may be the closest we get.
