Spielman in charge? Its a great day to be a Bears, Packers, & even a Lions fan. I can't help but wonder if this is a reward for the Vernon Carey debacle back during the 04 draft.
I don't know much about Rick, but I loved the way his brother Chris played the game. I think Chris Spielman would make a great NFL Head Coach. The Spielman boys grew up living and breathing football, their father was the Head coach for one of Ohio's greatest High School football programs. I have a feeling Rick Spielman got a undeserved bad rap in Miami. I find it comical the way Dolphin fans pratically worship Nick Saban while he continues to sign players off the Detroit Lions scrap heep. But then again they likely blame Rick Spielman for signing Stockar McDougle and giving up a draft pick and WAY overpaying for Princess Harrington.
I didn't know much about Rick Spielman until I actually heard him doing analysis for ESPN pre-draft as their "draft expert." He had absolutely nothing insightful to add about any player and came across, in general, as a guy who's "not very bright." You know...the same way Matt Millen does when he interviews.

It could be said tht the Lions gave up too much for Joey first. Rather, it was the inepititude of the Lions franchise that "ruined" Joey. To date, Saban's only mistake may be DE Matt Roth. Stockar was temporary upgrade made by Nick to improve the OL that Wanny, Tony Wise (former OL coach), & Spilelman destoyed. Last I checked, Nick kept McDougle for 1 year and Stockar is now in Jacksonville. Spielman's plus was acquiring Hadnot (OG) and Derrick Pope (Backup LB) which minimally negates his truly overpying for Feeley, the Carey debacle as mentioned, and Reggie Hoawrd. What I find comical is that your response (for there is only one) is as predictable as the weather in Seattle.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (FLORIDA PACKER)</div><div class='quotemain'>Speaking of Miami's o-line hows Vernon Carey progressing? I haven't heard much of him.</div> From what I gather, Carey is doing okay. There is some speculation he may move to RG.

It must be difficult watching the Pussy Cats get the crap kicked out them year after miserable year after miserable year and then see the Dolphins hire a new coach after one bad season and show immediate improvement. As far as Rick Spielman goes, he may not have been given the biggest or best opportunity in Miami, but he really didn't give the Dolphins much reason to keep him. Perhaps, he'll do better in Minnesota, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

(lol) I expect he'll also be ready to make draft picks within the time allowed. (lol) That's an IMPROVEMENTfor the Vikings.

I also don't root for one of the most consistantly crappy football teams in NFL history, so I don't have to twist the truth like Baghdad Bob. Perhaps you have a link to this so-called "good looking resume?" What did Spielman do in Miami that was so great? Could we get some details?

A joke is only funny for so long before it becomes unoriginal (right BF1? I mean, how many deals can Favre make?) The StarTrib today reported that Spielman apparantly has a fairly limited role in the organization. Brezinksi gets a say in terms of the salary cap, and Childress gets his say over whether a player will fit in scheme wise. As for the draft, that appears to be Scott Studwell's job. Personally, I would have loved to see Studwell get the Personnel job, but if nothing else, it seems as if he may have exclusive control over the draft now.
As for the resume I was watching NFL Total Access and they said his previous jobs were with the Bears, Lions, and Dolphins. None of them had a lot of sucess in the 90's and 00's. I really don't know what to make of the hire. Sounds like from what VF said he doesn't has near as much say as he did with the other 3 teams I named. So maybe it's not a bad move.

It sounds like Spielman is in charge of scouting. He is a decent evaluator of talent but still nothing to write home about. My only question with Minnesota is; how will Childress adapt to being the man? i.e. Andy Reid did the play calling in Philly.

This is partly why I was in favor of Tice staying on. Although Tice had his problems, he was showing signs of 'getting it'. I think if he were to have Tomlin as his D-Coordinator earlier on, the team could have been more competitive. Of course, I'm hoping Childress comes in and shows why he was one of the hottest coaching prospects in the NFL. I won't hide the fact that I have my doubts about the team this year, though.
