If ever there was a chance for Ricky Davis to go off the reservation, it was Monday night in New Jersey.

He helped keep the Celtics afloat with Paul Pierce [news] in foul trouble in the first half, scoring 11 of his 17 points before the break. But as the third quarter wore on, there Davis sat. And sat.

On television, Tommy Heinsohn was openly wondering when Davis would get back in. But the man heretofore renowned for his alleged selfishness kept calm. And when he got his chance, he delivered again in the Celtics' win.

``I think he's obviously been extremely important,'' interim coach John Carroll said yesterday. ``(Monday) night was a prime example. In a game where Paul struggled and Chucky (Atkins) struggled, especially early, Ricky really held us together in that second quarter with Paul being on the bench.

``I think development as a basketball player is kind of a strange thing. You never really know exactly if what you're trying to do is coming across, but I've watched Ricky have some really good performances for us. And what I liked about (Monday) night's game is that all his points were meaningful points. I thought he was really big (Monday) night and he's been big in the last couple of weeks. I go back to him guarding (Tracy) McGrady in the Orlando game.''

Davis has done a good job on defense and has also guarded his emotions well. There's no question he wants to play more than the 28 minutes a night he's getting here, but as he said yesterday of his new role, ``Definitely I'm cool with it. I'll do whatever I've got to do to help the team.''

Yea Ricky can never be a main guy anyways, he's most effective off the bench, or as a second or third guy.

    <u>Ricky Log</u>

Ricky Davis with Andre Miller: 11.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.2 apg, 48.1% FG

Ricky alone and ruling Cleveland: 20.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 5.5 apg, 41.0% FG

Ricky with Lebron, Boozer and Z: 15.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.0 apg, 43.1% FG

Ricky with Pierce: 13.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.6 apg, 48.4% FG

Ricky is proving his detractors wrong

I like what I've seen out of Ricky Davis here in Boston. He came in with the reputation of a big headed, selfish player who was only interested in his stats.

To date, I can't see any actions while he's been with Boston that indicate that was a fair portrayal.

He's kept his mouth shut, been on very good behavior publically and with the team (except when Blount got into him with it at practice). He's done what he's been asked and played team ball.

I'm perfectly happy with what he's done here and his future here.

I agree 100%, he's getting a bad rap because of his past. As a Celtic he has played well defensively and when Carroll puts him in he is the most efficient scorer outside of Pierce. I was at the Nets game on Monday and he came in when Pierce got in foul trouble and scored 12 points while playing good defense. He hasn't complained about limited playing time and he hasn't been selfish.

On the Nets game on Monday, Carroll is a bad coach. He plays Walter twice as much as he deserves and then he put in Jumaine Jones at PF instead of Brandon Hunter. Rodney Rodgers ate Jones alive on the boards, it was pathetic. Carroll also doesn't play Banks and Davis enough. They went in in the second quarter and gave the team an energy boost, sending them on a little run. Neither played in the third quarter. It seems like Carroll ruins every young Celtic's confidence. Hunter had a great stretch a few weeks ago, now he doesn't play, Banks and Jones play, but not conistently. Carroll needs to develop a better rotation or he will never develop any talent. But he will probably be gone after the season, maybe they'll get a better offensive coach [IMG]

Og15 is the stats master. He must memorize them or something.

Ricky Davis likes the bench??? This guy is just proving time and time again how selfish he can be!! He is not a winner period.

I'm just playing. He came into Boston with a fresh attitude and no baggage. Can we say that he is one of the reasons for their playoffs run? I can.

BTW, so much for Danny Ainge trying to make the lottery. Is it me or can he just not get a break? He finally got some people to realize that dismantling this team was good for the franchise. He was confident a lottery pick would bring his team good fortune for years to come. Now his team is winning and that lottery pick is seeming farther and farther away with each game. I wonder if he's happy with the teams success or he's thinking of better ways on how to scew the team out of talent?

Okay enough with that, Good job Ricky, keep up the good work.

Ricky's getting some props now. On the real though Danny Ainge must be saying damn to himself now. Ricky shouldn't mind, he's been coming off the bench for most of his career. It shouldn't to much of a readjustment for him.

I like what ricky has done for the celts. He brings some excitement with his off the wall physical ability, and solid offense when provided with playing time. He has turned into a really fun guy to watch and I hope him and pierce can turn into a unified scoring machine.

Yeah I hope Ricky and Pierce turn into a unified scoring machines. But to bad they both basically play the same position. If it wasn't for that reason, Ricky would be starting and Pierce would be play the 3.

Yeah. I think that part of that maturity that is coming to Ricky stems from the fact that they've got him reminded that he's got perhaps the best pull up jumpers in the league. It's sudden and released high. He should savor his opportunities for the highlight stuff, but make his living schooling people off the dribble pull up inside 18ft.

Here's a good article on Davis as a Celtic. Davis's role is a slam dunk <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">With the exception of a couple of breakaway dunks that demonstrated poor judgment and a couple of anti-Cleveland comments that exhibited poor taste, Ricky Davis has kept a relatively low profile since arriving in Boston. He accepted his role as a bench player without public complaint or protest. On many nights, Davis stays on the floor for more than 30 minutes, reaches double figures, then leaves without commenting on his performances. Better just to be seen, he figures. And with his shooting percentage on the rise, Davis has been seen a lot, proving himself an invaluable part of the Celtics' rotation.</div>

This is like the only instance where I've seen Davis show some class and humility. Finally accepting his role as a helper rather than a star. It's nice to see the development that will come from the combination of the two scoring abilities of Pierce, now if only D would come knocking at their doors. Damn Ainge.
