Stephen A. Smith was just on ESPN talking about Jerry West possibly retiring after this year, and Pat Riley taking his place as GM in Memphis. Riley is set to recieve a lum sum payment from the Heat as part of his partial ownership deal. Once he gets that payment, jumping ship is a possibility, according to Smith.
Pat Riley is NOT leaving the Heat until Shaq retires and/or he brings a championship to Miami. Remember the promise of the parade down Biscayne Blvd. I'm holding Riley to that. (and no the Marlins parades, however great, don't count on this thread)
I think Riley said, in his early days with Miami(Zo era), that he would love to retire in Miami. I don't think, at his age, he will go for another job.
I agree, he is too old to go and start over. also, this is the reason he came to miami, to help us win a championship, and now that were are very close to it, he's gonna bail? I dunno... He's a great recruiter and he's practically the face of our organization. I really do hope he stays with us and watch Wade , Dorell, and other future drafts grow and develope in the NBA I don't think Mickey Arison is gonna let the best thing happen to his franchise just walk away.
Also you have to remember this. Miami (or the whole Florida state for that matter) is the best place to retire. Nice weather, low prices(at least when I lived there or compared to NY), girls are nice and willing , and we have a great basketball team to watch!!!!

Miami is where most people would love to retire. Who wants to go to MEMPHIS to retire!
hahaha, Yea im from NY also, the weather is crazy and it gets boring after awhile, although u can get away with anything in NY. anyways,...Awhile ago Pat said that he loved to watch the team he created...the players he traded for and drafted, he was always excited to see them play.
I remember when the Lakers offered him a coaching job to help revive "Showtime" and he turned it down. I guess he figured since he was gonna get Shaq he would rather be involved with the Heat. If he turned down coaching for the Lakers I doubt he would want to be a GM for Memphis even if the money is good or perhaps even better.
Riley is already one of the greatest coaches of all time and after being able to pull off this Shaq deal, if the Heat win a championship Riley will also be considered one of the greatest GM's of all time. He successfully pulled off one of the largest deals in NBA history, there's no chance he'll leave now.
