A great, great human being....I recommend reading through his quotes for those who didn't know him..I met him twice in my life...true American hero https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Gregory
My grandfather gave my brothers and I a paperback copy of "Back Of The Bus" when I was 13 years old. He told us to read it and followed up with us to be sure that we had. Dick Gregory made me laugh my ass off while forcing me to think about stuff I had never pondered before. The world needs more people like Dick Gregory and my grandfather.....
Gregory was funny when he first began. Or at least I thought he was. But then after after Cosby came on the scene, he seemed to change his routine. I noticed him doing short routines to a white audience to get some laughs, then go make fun of them in front of another audience. ummm!
Every black person in entertainment can thank Dick for being able to showcase their talent. Dick was the first black person to do stand up comedy in front of white people. See, if you were black, you could sing & dance and shuck & jive for them, but you couldn't stand up, talk, and speak your mind. Because if you did that they'd have to accept that you have a level of intelligence. There would be no Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, or any other black comic if there were no Dick Gregory. Leave it to MarAzul to come in here and sully his name. Dick understood your kind some time ago and was an interpreter to us.
Smartass. We know I was born in 76'.... I didn't see it live but yes I did see it. He spoke truth to power. I saw a lot of his standup. He told white folk to their face that they were fucked up to us. Not sure what you're talking about.
I think I spoke plain enough. He was very funny to start, a big hit on Jack Parr. Then it became pretty much a put down of white people. Not so funny, as I am sure you can understand. But do what you will.
Ok, if you say so. Perhaps my I don't have the story right, I claim no expertise here. Just my own limited exposure. He was funny on TV the few times I saw him early on. Then it was another story in a club in Chicago. My face had to travel to black club to see what was funny as hell to most but me and damn few others there. I didn't really mind, but that changed the view.
Dick Gregory was way more than just an entertainer...he was a great man. Thread was not intended for pissing on his grave which is strikingly similar to complaining about his views on racism when he was in an uncensored environment....read some of his quotes...he lived a life of dignity and understood the power of humor in a special way. So many greats were influenced by him and I'm sure will continue to be.....
I read one of his books when I was about 13. I think I may still have it. Rest in humor, in justice, in peace.
