I heard that Phillip Rivers left the San Diego area because negotiations broke down. How many duds can the Charger's really take at QB?

Also, do you think that rookies should ever hold out? I think that a rookie should sign whatever he can get, regardless of where they go in the draft. Until they prove themselves in the NFL, what sort of bargaining power do they really have?

Rivers is the next Akili Smith, a player that got drafted after one good year in college. Signs late in camp, never really gets chance. Just watch it. Big mistake on his part.

I dont understand why the NFLPA doesnt concede rookie pool money and funnel cash towards vets....its seams as if its in the best interest of the league and union to do so, yet it never happens in CBA negotiation....If they sloted the 1st rounders like the NBA does with guaranteed deals for them, it would eliminate holdouts, get kids in camp on time and leave more money for older players that have proven thier worth....slot them as such:

All deals are for 3 years, all money is guaranteed

    1.$6mil with $2mil bonus
    2.$6mil w/ $1.8mil bonus
    3.$6mil w/ $1.6mil bonus
    4.$6mil w/ $1.4mil bonus
    5.$6mil w/ $1.2mil bonus
    6.$5mil w/ $1mil
    7.$5mil w/ $.9mil
    8.$5mil w/ $.8mil
    9.$5mil w/ $.7mil
    10.$5mil w/ .6mil

    and so on....

Leave it to the Sparks to let their 1st round pick leave town. This franchise is a joke. Too bad for little LT, he deserves better.

Rivers was a 4 year starter at NC state and was very successful, I am sure he must have broke almost every career passing record for the ACC.

I agree with you Beef. I think that it is a lot of pressure for a rookie as well to enter into a big time contract negotiation. They tend to trust their agents first, which results in the holdouts. There have just been too many cases where a first rounder really isn't worth his money. Prove it first, then ask for the money.

what do you guys mean he left town, for good (which is probably stupid to assume) or just because the contract talks broke down. I dont think rookies should hold out, its disrepecting everyone on the team, stupid move by rivers i would just struggle to get my contract done in his situation and get out there and help your team

I say "who cares?" Let him go... If he wants to sit out the entire year and re-enter the draft next year, he'll never get drafted as high as he did this year. He's only going to lose out on a ton of money. Screw him. Time to teach the rookie a lesson.

IK absolutely hate how these rookies lately think they can get more money than some of the veterans who are better and have led their teams to vicotyr. Like I dont care if Eli is related to Peyton or Archie, he hasnt proved anything besides he can throw the dang ball, and he gets paid so much monye, plus he wined his way to NY. Same with Winslow, he finally signs, geez. Just cuz they did good in college doesnt mean they are gonna do good in the NFL. Two diff. levels. Thats the reason why you are drafted, cuz u did good in college, and look at all the players in the NFL that were drafted 1st of 2nd round, and suck ballz

i heard the incentives they were offering were 4 super bowl wins in first 4 years and you get 5 million, 5 in 5 years and you get 7.5 million and 6 in 6 years and you get 10 million. With stupid incentives like that i understand why he left.

Its funny cause phillip and his agent truley beleive that he is worth 1 overall money. Tho he was taken in at 4 by the giants whom the chargers talked them into drafting, so they could swap eli and philip.
Philip is trying to cash in on the number 1 overall salery. Carson palmer dollars. lol. Truley a dream for a side arm charlie who may be ryan leaf.

I hope if he gets signed, the teams that play him sack him 4 times each game to welcome him intoi the NFL and make him earn his dollars

They think it because they can....its been proven over and over agian that a high 1st round pick will make the mojority of his money off his draft day contract, so they go for the gold....unless these players exceed expectations, its the last really big payday of thier careers....and none of them are worth what they got thier teams....

With those mission impossible incentives that the Chargers are showing Rivers, it makes one almost sympathize with Eli Manning on his decision to not play for SD.
Would Eli's contract would have looked much different than the one they offered to Rivers? Probably not.

The bonus money would have to be more (for Eli), but the Charger organization has not been seen as overly generous in their offers of late. I don't know what LT's out date is, but I can bet he will be out the door as fast as his [soon to be] worn to nubs legs will carry him. The Chargers constantly preach that they are a small market team and can't produce the revenue that "big market" teams can. I've been to San Diego. It's not a small place. On top of that, the three closest NFL teams are in Tempe and SF/OAK. Not exactly overrun if you can market a winner.

The Chargers need to quit hiding behind the "small market" excuse. That's why the NFL has revenue sharing and a salary cap.

As for rookies looking to make a big payday coming out of college, can you blame them? Teams have no loyalty to players. Players need to make money when they can because if they get hurt or a team can save money by cutting them for someone else, the team won't hesistate to pull the trigger. I don't know the specifics of River's case, so I won't pass judgement on him. I hope his agent knows what he's doing.

Dale, you are a genius. Take what they will pay. You are worth whatever your employer is willing to expend. Nobody in America is underpaid. Undervalued maybe, but not underpaid.
