Rivers switches up Magic’s game plan

Now starting at point guard ... Tracy McGrady?

Well, that was the plan Wednesday night before the Magic lost to the New Orleans Hornets.

There was nothing physically wrong with Tyronn Lue, the designated starter. McGrady, however, had a sore hip, scuttling Coach Doc Rivers' idea to give his new-look team a different look.

"I was starting the game that way, having T-Mac at the point for, oh, the first four or five minutes," Rivers said.

"Tyronn is our point guard," said Rivers, shrugging off Lue's scoreless debut in which he concentrated on quarterbacking the offense.

Rivers liked what he saw in the Magic's preseason opener in Dallas when he played McGrady briefly at the point, allowing him to run the show at a Magic Johnson-sized 6-feet-8.

    Injuries worry Rivers

On the injury front, Rivers is worried about F Donnell Harvey, who did not play because of an abdominal strain.

"It could be a hernia," Rivers said. "We don't know how long he might be out."

Same goes for rookie C Zaza Pachulia. Pachulia sprained his left ankle early in training camp. Then he tried working out on it Wednesday and, according to Rivers, "tweaked it again."

    Armstrong greets Magic

Hornets PG Darrell Armstrong greeted some of his old teammates -- including McGrady and Andrew DeClercq -- during warmups.

"I'm going to see these guys so much in the next few months that maybe we ought to join the teams," said Armstrong, noting that the Magic play the Hornets three times this month.

Hornets Coach Tim Floyd said of Armstrong, "I think he probably starts for 14 or 15 teams in this league at 35, which tells you where he was when he was 28."

    Magic pass on Mutombo

While conceding that C Dikembe Mutombo is intriguing and would fit perfectly with a team lacking a shot-blocking defender, Rivers said, "We've been down the road before with guys his age." The Magic have experimented in recent years, bringing in aging veterans Shawn Kemp, Patrick Ewing and Horace Grant.

I was just about to post this. It would be cool to watch but it would never work. Tracy is a great offensive player and is a shoot first player. It would cause crazy matchup problems but it wont be happening. If it were to occur it would be just like Philly with Allen Iverson. He is shoot first and anyone that offensively blessed needs a player to set them up.
