VITALS: 7-1, 225, Paris Basket Racing (France)

OVERVIEW: A native of Yugoslavia who holds citizenship in Bosnia and Israel, Rothbart emigrated to the United States at age eight. He averaged 21 points and a California State-leading 15 rebounds and five blocks at Natomas High School as a senior. He turned down a scholarship from Indiana to sign professionally and play in France. However, he played just one minute of one game before undergoing shoulder surgery.

    LIKELY DRAFT POSITION: Second round.

    COMPARATIVE UPSIDE: Dan Gadzuric

    COMPARATIVE DOWNSIDE: Sean Marks

    ROLE PROJECTION: Backup center.

POSITIVES: Rothbart is an excellent athlete who can run the court. He has a wingspan to match his height, so he can be an effective shot-blocker, and has a good touch around the basket. Since Rothbart knows he isn't ready to play in the NBA, he would likely be agreeable to spend another two years in Europe while the drafting team retains his rights. Many teams are planning these types of arrangements these days.

SHORTCOMINGS: Rothbart decided to turn pro after the date of the 2004 draft, so he is eligible to be chosen this year under NBA draft rules. While Rothbart is not nearly ready to play in the NBA, a team willing to invest some years in his development - the way Portland is trying to do with Ha Seung-Jin - might get a big payoff in a few years.
