Link
QUOTE

Punter Darren Bennett had one foot out the door Sunday while receiver Koren Robinson had one foot in on a day of surprises at Winter Park. The Vikings released Bennett, who had survived the final roster cutdown Saturday, but indicated he could return as early as the Sept. 18 game at Cincinnati if they can't find a suitable alternative this week.Robinson, who sought treatment this summer for alcoholism, had an evening meeting scheduled with coach Mike Tice. Robinson also has a Sept. 14 court date stemming from a drunken driving conviction, and Tice indicated the team has no immediate plans to sign him. But Robinson is close friends with Vikings cornerback Brian Williams, his teammate at North Carolina State, and would add a vertical threat to the Vikings offense."He's a good football player," Tice said. "He's going through some life challenges. I'm going to spend some time myself with him. ... [Williams]indicated to me that I should make contact, and I did. So we brought him in for a visit. So we'll just see how it goes."Robinson, 25, was selected ninth overall by Seattle in the 2001 draft. His best season came in 2002, when he caught 78 passes for 1,240 yards. But the Seahawks released him in June after several off-field incidents, the latest a drunk driving stop in May in which he registered a blood-alcohol content of .191.Robinson pleaded guilty July 18 and was sentenced to one day in jail with 364 days suspended, but the case was reopened when officers smelled alcohol on his breath when he arrived to serve his day in jail.Robinson, who checked himself into a 28-day alcohol treatment program in South Carolina last month, will have his hearing Sept. 14 in Kirkland (Wash.) Municipal Court. It would seem unlikely that any team would sign him before then.He served a four-game suspension last season for violating the league's substance abuse policy and was suspended for two other games after missing team meetings. He is at least the second high-profile receiver the Vikings have approached in the past seven days; they made contact last week with the agent for receiver Peter Warrick, who signed with Seattle."We'll just see how it goes," Tice said. "There's nothing pending. There's nothing imminent. We just wanted to touch base and visit."Meanwhile, Tice, who canceled a scheduled practice, informed Bennett of his release Sunday after the Vikings were awarded rookie punter Chris Kluwe on waivers from Seattle.Bennett shanked two punts in the preseason finale against the Seahawks -- one traveled 19 yards and the other rolled for 31 yards -- and finished the preseason with a 38.2-yard average on 14 punts. He finished last season ranked 30th among NFL punters in gross average.Tice said Kluwe, who averaged 42.1 yards on nine punts this preseason, would essentially get a two-day tryout for the job, starting today. The team plans to bring in several other punters for workouts Tuesday, and the only certainty is that someone other than Bennett will punt Sunday against Tampa Bay."It had to do with the word that I've used around here," Tice said, "and that's consistency. [Bennett] understands that. That doesn't mean he's not going to come back with us. ... But for the first week, we won't punt Darren Bennett, and then we'll see after then how this thing plays out."Bennett didn't return a phone call Sunday.Releasing him now gave the Vikings additional financial flexibility for this season; had Bennett been on the roster for the opening game, the Vikings would have been required to guarantee his $760,000 base salary for the season. If they re-sign him after the first game, they will be responsible only for the prorated portion of that salary. That rule applies for all NFL players with four or more years of experience, making it unlikely the Vikings would immediately sign one of the other veteran punters available -- a list that includes Sean Landeta, Tom Rouen and Chris Mohr.Kluwe, who kicked the past four seasons for UCLA, would be the fifth punter in Tice's four seasons as Vikings coach. The Seahawks gave their punting job to Leo Araguz, who punted for the Vikings in 2003.Etc.? The Vikings signed seven players to their practice squad and will fill the final spot this morning, likely with an offensive lineman. The seven: receiver Chris Jones, safety Will Hunter, running back Adimchinobe Echemandu, linebacker Heath Farwell, tackles Shannon Snell and Sean Bubin and tight end Richard Angulo.? Tice said running backs Michael Bennett (neck) and Mewelde Moore (ankle) will be ready for Sunday's game. Bennett will probably start, with Moore a possibility as a kickoff returner.Kevin Seifert is atkseifert@startribune.com.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Lets hope Robinson isn't just another guy like Kelly C. But if he can work out his drinking life then he might be good.
Another receiver! Who do they have now.1.Burleson2.Marcus Robinson3.Troy Williamson4.Kelley Cambell5.Travis Taylor6.Koren Robinson! There might even be one I'm forgetting, but all of those receivers besides Burleson and probly WIlliamson, are in general equal in talent.
Actually, it looks more like this... so far1.Nate Burleston2.Travis Taylor3.Marcus Robinson4,5. Koren Robinson or Troy Williamson6.Kelley Campbell
oh, I wasn't listing like the Depth chart. I was just saying they got so many "pretty good" receivers.
Oh, alright. And they do, they got 6 receivers that all have talent. I don't even know how they're going to keep all of them.
You guys realize that Koren Robinson ISN'T on the Vikings yet, if at all, right?BTW...why sign a Seahawks castoff, when we had Travis Dorsch?

He's easily the most talented reciever on your roster, but it all depends on if he can/will use that potential on helping his team win.

This kid has unbelieveable potential, but if he would just stay focused and stay on the field you would have a tremendous player.Speaking on potenial alone, Burleson and Williamson are not as good as Robinson.
M. Robinson just has alot of height advantage over most defenders, potentially and in reality Burleson is the best reciever on the Vikings. K. Robinson isn't even yet signed. And He IS better than Troy, he just has to hold on to the ball more
Burlseon last year. 68catches 1006yards 14.8avg 9TD.tell me again how Robinsin is better than Nate AND Williamson combined?

My reading comprehension is fine. Your clarification is what needs work. If you gauge people on "potential," Ryan Leaf could have been the greatest QB in NFL history. And speaking of crazy and stupid statements, if YOU think Burleson got those numbers solely because of Moss, then you may be the one in need of a padded room and sleeveless jacket.Moss was out for 6 games, and injured for most of the rest. Moss never came CLOSE to seeing the coverages and double teams he has seen in his best years. Not even close. Burlseon was double teamed every bit as much as Moss was. The last three years Moss has had plantir facitis, back spasms, ankle sprains, and concussions. he's not been the Randy Moss of 1998 or 2000. But, talk is cheap. I'll bet you that Burleson finishes in at least the top 10 in catches, yards, and touchdowns this year among WR.
