http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/242034/Rockets-Hire-Mike-DAntoni-As-Head-Coach The Houston Rockets have decided to hire Mike D'Antoni as head coach. D'Antoni was last a head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers and was most recently an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers. Stephen Silas and James Borrego also received strong consideration from the Rockets. Houston fired Kevin McHale last November and chose not to retain J.B. Bickerstaff after he served as interim head coach.
Mike D'Antoni must be getting close to his 9 life as a head coach in the NBA by this time. But, given what they were trying to build there - he seems like a reasonable option - his teams play fast, shoot 3s and do not play defense. James Harden was born to play for Mikey D.
OK so it is pretty much confirms that Dwight will be looking for a new team. Not that we didn't suspect that before, but I assume this seals it.
Agree. Everyone is shitting on this hire but I think it has a low key chance of being a great pairing. No the rockets won't play defense, but Harden is an elite pick and roll player and D'Antoni has had immense success with a pick and roll offense. Surround Harden with a bunch of role players and the Rockets can run a terrorizing offense.
Could be that HOU made the hire to force Howard out. If they thought he might pick up the option, and didn't want him to, what better way to make him change his mind? Of course I think Howard was probably going to leave even before they made the decision to hire MD.
Has his offense worked with any team that did not have Steve Nash running it? Nash was a pass first PG, Harden is a pass last SG. I agree it is worth a try because I am not sure what other options they have with Harden on the team. He is going to dominate the ball regardless, so you might as well go all in with that philosophy.
Memphis hired a Miami Heat assistant coach today as their new head coach. Anyone know anything about this Fizz guy? I've never heard of him.
Problem is they way complaining about upgrade there defense and then they hire someone that all offense. But I guess there trying to hire a defense to sit beside him.
Running can hide a lot of weakness. Their PG will thrive under D'Antoni. Then, they'll lose in the playoffs.
No he wouldn't. He over thinks things and D'Antoni's system is about doing things quickly and fluidly. All Meyers can do is shoot slow 3's.
Fuck yeah, that organization is a dumpster fire. Good stuff. Will he even make Harden cross half court on d?
Patrick Beverly is no Steve Nash....Howard basically got D'antoni fired in LA..that's a sign he's gone. Harden doesn't really have a trailer on fast breaks like the Suns used with Barbosa and Nash. I think this is going to go badly for the Rockets and that suits me fine.
