I like Jeff Van Gundy, he's a good coach. But we all know that we need to get younger and more athletic, and Van Gundy isn't fit to coach a young team like say a Mike Brown. Van Gundy's offense centers around a half court mental game, which benefits older veteran players. I don't think Van Gundy has the patience or personal to handle a young core of players. I could just imagine his exaggerated facial expressions everytime one of our young players makes a mistake . If we're really going to commit to rebuilding, we should it do it now and fire Van Gundy. Then we can bring in somebody that's a little more energetic and enthusiastic like Don Nelson. I think it'll help or younger players develop faster.
well, there are a couple of coaches on the market. don nelson, as you said, could be a canidate. larry brown, but i dont think he has much interest in the rockets, and i doubt he will play the young guys much at all. you guys could look at jim o brien, who coached the sixers two seasons ago. he is still on the market, and is a pretty good coach IMO. he is a tough, and a no nonsense type of coach. i think he could fair pretty well with the rockets
how about rick adelman? i like his offensive system at sacramento. Maybe he can do the same to houston's offense as well
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TmacGarnett:</div><div class="quote_post">I say pursue coach K</div> Coach K won't leave. Remember last year?
1. Rick Adelman 2. Larry Brown 3. Don Nelson Three great coaches that can atleast lead us to the playoffs.
Rick Adelmen is my choice...you know what he can do with big men and his offensive schemes are great...defensively...Houston knows what they can do...
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting TmacGarnett:</div><div class="quote_post">I say pursue coach K</div> College coach's don't fit well in the NBA....but Rick Adelman was somebody i completley forgot about, good look.
I like Adelman...he's really the only coach out there that makes me think he'd be better right away than JVG. Problem is, Les is standing behind JVG 100%....
Van Gundy ain't goin nowhere for at least another 2 years, so we might as well get used to mr. Ineedsomeprozacdesperately.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting THE DREAM:</div><div class="quote_post">Van Gundy ain't goin nowhere for at least another 2 years, so we might as well get used to mr. Ineedsomeprozacdesperately.</div> Unfortunaltey, our young players will suffer because of this too.
Rick Adelman would better our offense no doubt, but we'd probably have one of the worst defenses in the league. The Rockets do not have a lot of defensive talent, and if guys like Bowen or Mutombo, who are our best defenders, don't produce on offense, they won't get off the court. What's holding our defense together is Van Gundy's system, and if we are to become a better offensive team, the defense can't be the same. The way this team is built, Van Gundy is the right coach. Going uptempo isn't going to happen overnight with the players we have, so getting Adelman won't be anywhere as effective as if we had players like Mike Bibby and a big man like Chris Webber who can run the floor.
The following graphs show how Adelman's teams have done, relative to the league, in offensive and defensive efficiency (points scored and allowed per possession, respectively): And for Van Gundy: Adelman obviously has a more extensive coaching career than Van Gundy in the NBA. Adelman has coached some very good defensive teams, particularly in Portland but also Sacramento was a very good defensive team (contrary to popular opinion) for a few seasons. Adelman also coached some very poor defensive teams. Offensively, his teams have been all over the map as well. But overall, it appears that he's quite capable of coaching a solid offensive and defensive team. His coaching style possibly would bring more balance. Then again, what might conclude given the high variation that the results he brings largely depends on the personnel. Van Gundy has consistently had very good defensive teams, and subpar to downright terrible offensive teams. To what extent is this pattern dependent on the personnel versus his system? He had very good defensive players in New York, but even with mediocre individual defensive talent in Houston he's gotten very strong results.
^^^I swear I don't think I ever want to get an argument about basketball with you....you're always bringing out charts and stats that NO one can find....lol....but yeah I've always thought Adelman was a good coach, since his days in Portland.

We have defensive minded players on our team from Deke, Bogan and Tmac. Sac never had a real center or defensive minded player outside of Doug Christie (with the exception of this year). I like JVG, but he's only successful with a team full of veterans who will put up with his tirades. Now that we're in semi rebuilding process, he might not be the best fit.
