I still don't know how this dude's name comes up in the discussion of top 10 QB's in the league. Thankfully, people are finally starting to realize he isn't. Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Gay Cuddler (yes, Gay Cuddler), Carson Palmer, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, and maybe Matt Schuab, are all QB's I'd rather have on my team right now and everyone on that list minus Favre is someone I'd rather build around.
probably because he's been a top 10 qb the past 3 years. and while he hasn't been very good so far this season, i expect him to finish the season as a top 10 qb again.
he's been a top 10 qb the past 3 years. how many qbs win playoff games each year(hint - the answer is less than 10)? the last 3 years he's been 5th, 5th, and 8th in passer rating and has a 29-16 record as a starter(regular season and playoffs). you're really going to say he doesn't belong in the conversation? he's definitely been bad this year, but i think the past 3 years indicate that he's probably better than he's played so far.
Romo's consistently regressed since his outstanding '07 season. Things that he did well then are suddenly completely absent from his repertoire. He isn't as good at picking his spots with his scrambling. He's become much easier to read through his eyes (opposing defenses are diagnosing him pre-snap more often). And he's becoming more and more inaccurate. Seriously, check out his completion % since he became a full-time starter for the Cowboys (65.3, 64.4, 61.3, 58.0). It's a damning trend. To be considered an elite QB by the end of the season we'd need to see a pretty remarkable turnaround. I think the problem is that it's been ingrained in his head that he has to be a playmaking QB. He approaches the game with this Favrian mentality that he has to keeping hitting the riskier big play. And defenses have keyed in on that tendency of his. He's a good enough QB that he could take what the defenses give him and be productive enough to lead his teams to wins. But too often he goes against the grain and forces it, which leads to mistakes. I will admit that he's had less help from his skill players this year. People seem to overlook the fact that Roy Williams has been forgettable so far this season. He's been completely shut out in two games and mediocre in another. If it weren't for the Tampa game, he'd statistically be one of the worst #1 WR's in the league so far.
This season, I'd take Peyton, Brady, Brees, Rivers, Eli, Roethlisberger, Warner, and Flacco before Romo. McNabb might be on that list if he was healthy.
yet he's still consistently been a top 10 qb. this is the first year he hasn't performed to that level, but with only a 4th of the season gone i think it's likely he gets back there. he's got a fairly easy 3 game stretch and a bye week coming up, so he certainly has an opportunity to get things back together. i think that was his problem against the giants(when the cowboys could have won that game with romo doing nothing) and he's tried to over correct that so far in the games afterwards and not really thrown the ball downfield. hopefully he can find a good balance between making plays and just taking care of the ball. obviously if you just project his numbers so far for a full season, it's going to have been a bad year.
