Rondo plays a big role

The Big Three may have led the Celtics [team stats] down the stretch last night, but perhaps the title has to change in order to add a number.

“I know people call them the Big Three, but I don’t know why people don’t call them the Big Four,” Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said of Rajon Rondo [stats], who finished last night’s 96-86 series-clinching C’s win with 16 points, 12 assists, eight rebounds and four steals. “He plays in another gear, and not just in the regular season against most of the point guards he faces. He gets into the playoffs and continues to take it up against other players.

“He has toughness and big-time confidence. Some people might consider that cockiness, but he gets them to the right places.”

That’s the Truth

Paul Pierce [stats] admitted that he had doubts this season about the Celtics jelling as they now apparently have after one playoff round.

“You definitely had doubts at times because of inconsistent play,” Pierce said. “But the thing I credit this team with is the mental toughness through the droughts when we didn’t win, when we lost three or four games, lose seven out of 10 games - we stuck together. We always talked in the locker room about what we can we do better. Losing teams tend to point the finger, go to the media and say this guy needs to do this or that better. (Coach) Doc (Rivers) never does that. Maybe on occasion, but for the most part if he goes to the media, he tells the player first. And we never hold grudges with one another.

“Sure, you get tired of guys from being around them 24/7, eight months out of the year. I am not going to lie - I get tired of the guys, looking at them every day, but we are able to stick together and talk it out through good and bad times. We are coming together like we are because we never point the finger. We are seeing that resolve right now in the playoffs.”

Rondo should have a pretty nice series against Cleveland. Mo Williams has not been a good defender this season.
