Manchester United's title push will receive a boost on Monday when striker Wayne Rooney returns from injury to lead the line against Fulham. And manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes Rooney will waste no time resuming where he left off before his recent injury - on the goal trail.

Wayne Rooney has recovered from a freak ankle injury sustained in training and is raring to go again. The England striker had scored nine goals in nine games for United and England he fell awkwardly during a game of head-tennis just 24 hours before United's Premier League victory over Blackburn Rovers three weeks ago.

While he's been sidelined, United have fallen three points behind Arsenal in the Premier League title race, and England have seen their Euro 2008 qualification hopes go up in smoke.

However, manager Sir Alex Ferguson is sure Rooney's return to the front line will spark an upsurge in United's league form following last weekend's shock defeat by Bolton.

He sees Rooney, 22, as something of a talisman for the team, and says ahead of Monday's clash with Fulham at Craven Cottage:

"Wayne has been training with the first team and has a few extra days to prepare, so I think he will be ready.

"He won't need any encouragement to play, that is for sure.

"His endurance work is fine and his fitness levels are good. He has not even been out for a month so I wouldn't imagine it will take him a long time to get his rhythm."

Argentine Carlos Tevez will no doubt welcome the return of strike partner Rooney, as the pair had hit a rich vein of form before Rooney's injury.

In fact between them they had racked up 12 goals in eight games playing together.

Ferguson commented: "His combination with Carlos has been really good.

"You do miss these players. There is no question about that. You cope but you still miss them. Wayne was on a good run of form before he got injured and hopefully he can continue it."

Ferguson als eased fears that Gary Neville's injury problems were becoming chronic.

He said Neville could be involved in the Champions League 'dead-rubber' against Roma on December 12th.

"Obviously, Gary not being involved on Thursday [in a reserve game] begged a question about his fitness but it was purely that he preferred to play with us," said Ferguson.

"We concurred with that because it is important for him not to do too much too soon and get some good training sessions under his belt before he starts playing again.

"I don't think he is far away now and if he comes through next week I am intending to take him to Rome."

The meeting with Fulham brings striker David Healy back to Old Trafford, the 28-year-old Ulsterman having begun his career with United. Healy was behind Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham in the pecking order at the time, and after a solitary League appearance for the Red Devils he joined Preston for £1.5million.

Healy did well at Deepdale before signing for Leeds United, and after three years at Elland Road he was signed by Fulham manager Lawrie Sanchez, who offered him the chance of Premier League football again.

Remarkably, though, Healy has made the greatest impact at international level, scoring a record 13 goals during the Euro 2008 qualifiers, with Ferguson an admirer.

"David has been fantastic," he said.

"When he was here as a young lad, David was blocked from making progress simply because at the time, we had four top strikers.

"We got a very good offer from Preston, which let the boy get on with his career and his form for Northern Ireland has been amazing.

"To score 13 goals from a country which is nowhere near one of the top sides in Europe is absolutely brilliant."
