Nash? Speaking of Kobe, we had the Kobe Killer in Ruben Patterson. Dame's nickname should be the Point Guard Killer!
He'll be just starting light activity in 12 weeks. My guess is they won't chance it and shut him down instead.
Oh yeah, Nash. My wishful thinking there. Actually, our Karl Malone mini-me should be Matthews, not Lillard.
I've had three meniscus repairs. It's all dependent on the type of tear, the location, and the size. A small tear where the only real option is to shave of the torn part of the meniscus (which is the most common type) is technically a quick recovery. You're really just dealing with the incisions healing, swelling going down, and then of course the rehab to the muscles as the nerves are going to be very unhappy about the activities that have taken place in that area. Since only about half of the meniscus gets nutrients from the body, some parts of it can't heal, and require removal. Some can heal in larger tears, and require dissolving anchors to be placed to hold it together, and then 6 - 8 weeks on non-weight bearing crutches to allow for healing, before any real walking or rehab can begin. I've dealt with both, and while I know a professional athlete is going to be facing a more conservative recovery protocol, I can tell you a small tear which involves shaving off the damaged tissue, Rose could be back as quick as he wants/team doctors allow (although it's not a good idea IMO with his career riding on how well he takes care of his knees). If it's a larger tear, especially in a location that is borderline able to heal properly, he's looking at closer to 6-8 months minimum. The first time I tore my meniscus, the lateral half had to be removed as it was torn into three pieces and beyond repair. The medial side was torn almost end to end down the middle, right on the border of where it's possible to heal. My surgeon gave it a 50/50 chance at healing, so we anchored it in, and I went on non-weight bearing for 8 weeks. Then it was learning how to walk, dealing with atrophy, etc. Took me 6 months to start running, and about a year to be considered fully recovered. Hopefully he's facing a minor tear (which despite being minor, can cause all sorts of swelling, pain, and range of motion issues so it can apear serious on the surface) and can get some debridement on that tissue and move on quickly.
Thanks for the info. I think the ACL injury and surgery on his other knee will affect his recovery as well.
If anyone recalls, Brandon Roy's seemingly heroic return from a meniscus repair during the playoffs, only, what about 10 days after surgery if I recall correct. That was because he had a small tear debridement, so he was able to man up and play through what was essentially some soreness and slight swelling from the surgery once the sutures were removed. What we didn't really know at the time was that they had pretty much shaved off what little was left of his meniscus and he was playing bone on bone with no cushion between the articular cartilage on his bones. That's why I say, and hope, it's something that Rose can return from miraculously. My guess is when Westbrook had his tear and had to have some followup work done, they anchored a small tear back, and a part of it formed some scar tissue, or didn't heal completely and they had to go back in there and debride the excess tissue so it had a smooth surface. So yeah, there's a lot of factors involved in this sort of thing. The terrible deal here is, Rose is such a valuable piece of that team, and with recent recovery from the ACL tear, he's going to deal with the substantial emotional toll of recovery and setback to his career, and the team will likely be extremely conservative in his return. It's such a tough situation, I feel for the Bulls, it looked like they were on track to return to their dominant ways and make a deep run with Rose, once they hammered out the team cohesion and he knocked off the rust.
apparently they are going to try to do a meniscus reattach (if possible and 4-6 month recovery) as opposed to cutting it out which would be the shorter 4-6 week recovery. Remember the comments recently where Wade said he wished he would have done the reattach earlier in his career vs the cut for longevity purposes. Reattaches can only be done some of the time, depends upon the tear and it's location. I think it's going ti be dependent upon them going in there and seeing if a reattach is viable.
I sit corrected. Probably better long term, but the Bulls were still a decent team without him last year.
Having torn both myself Bulls fans should feel great about about this news. *quick recovery *will return 100% *it's not the freaking acl
