If you're looking for a roadmap to Indiana Pacers center Roy Hibbert's plan – opt out and become a free agent or pick up the final year of his deal with Indiana that will pay him $15.5 million in 2015-16 – it helps to know agent David Falk's history. In the 1989-90 season, Adrian Dantley wanted out of Dallas, and Falk negotiated an early termination of Dantley's contract. So instead of being paid $1 million by the Mavericks in 1990-91, Dantley was headed for free agency in the summer of 1990, and Falk knew there would be teams interested in Dantley. But after negotiating the early termination of the contract, Dantley broke his leg and the market for him disappeared. Dantley ended up signing a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks for $400,000 and played just 10 games in 1990-91 before calling it quits. It bothers Falk to this day. In his book The Bald Truth, Falk wrote, "In hindsight, it was a disastrous decision. Never again in my career did I ever recommend that a player terminate existing years on a contract without having an ironclad commitment for a new deal in place. … "The experience literally brought me to tears – many times. I was embarrassed, humiliated and disappointed beyond description. … The experience scarred me to the point that when other players subsequently approached me about being unhappy with their situation I didn't allow them to get the fifth word out of their mouths before I said no. I told them I'd resign before I'd allow them to terminate existing years on a contract for a change of scenery. I could never live through that again." - See more at: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sport.../roy-hibbert-player-option-contract/29274867/
