This is what i heard from stories and other websites that Shawn "Matrix" Marion might be traded to get some more cap room to aquire Kobe Bryant and rebuild in the off season..... Honestly i think that would be stupid
One situation I hear about Marion is Marion to Charlotte for their first rounder... this frees the Suns of Shawn's contract and gives them the 4th pick in the draft (not sure if the Bobcats get to be in the lottery ) The deal that seems most believable is Googs to Utah. A few situations I've heard, such as... Googs + Knicks pick + Cavs pick -----> Keon Clark + Draft pick Googs + Voskuhl + Jacobsen + Draft pick -----> Clark + Stevenson In both cases it's just clearing a lot of space, mainly for this year... the Colangelos want to get under the tax threshold for this year and are like $4 million from it right now... there are rewards for being under it, so they could save yet another 10-15 million just by unloading Googs. Also all this Kobe talk... what about McGrady? He's not happy in Orlando, and Orlando's not happy with him, but remember what happened last time the Suns got a #1 from the Magic
Whos Googs?????? I think that traded the Matrix would be stupid they already traded Marbury and Amare is injured there gonna end up the worst team, and maybe be even worse than the cavs do later this season.
Googs=Tom Gugliatta(sp) and trust me, they wont trade him, if they do, even with Kobe, i dont know if they can win in the west.
I don't think Colangelo would be stupid enough to trade Marion, even if they're betting on getting Kobe. The Suns need some low-post scoring and rebounding, and it wouldn't be reasonable to trade Marion, who is their best rebounder and 1/2 the reason why fans come to Suns games; unless they get someone like KG or Tim Duncan.
What happens if Marion is traded, and they dont Get Kobe...he is convicted, or he signs with another team, it would be a stupid move to trade him

<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Vintage:</div><div class="quote_post">Kobe won't be in Phoenix next year. The deal was never about 'trying' to get Kobe.</div> I agree, no teams (Cavs aside) tank and get rid of players in hopes a certain savior will join their team. He'll take over the Lakers soon anyway when Shaq's toe finally gives and he retires. I doubt the Suns are dumping their salaries looking to get Kobe, perhaps they can HOPE to get such a player, or McGrady, or whoever... but they wouldn't ever trade somebody like Marbury for the small chance of a Kobe. I'm sure the Suns are going to get below the tax threshold, and during next summer evaluate who they can sign & trade for (Kobe is sure to be on the list, not saying it's going to happen, but I bet the Suns will at least inquire about it).
This wouldn't make much sense for Phoenix, Marion is a tremendous young player. Why would they move him with only "hopes" of acquiring Kobe Bryant? If a deal for Marion does go down, it means either one of two things: 1) The Suns have had discussions with Kobe, or his agent and have been assured that they without a doubt have the inside track. 2) Or, the Suns are intent on stripping the whole thing down to bare bones and rebuilding from ground zero. I would be absolutely shocked if Marion was moved, as I imagine would most Suns fans. Unless the Colangelos have some sort of "agreement" with Kobe, trading another young superstar like Marion simply to clear cap space would be completely asinine. Why not build around Marion, Stoudemire and Barbosa with two or three other free agents rather than blowing the entire bankroll for Kobe? It just doesn't add up to me. Turning attention to the Googs rumors, the Suns would be pulling an act of wizardry by dumping his contract on the Jazz. Googs has been a solid pro for many years, but he's been ready for the pasture now for at least two seasons. If they can move all of that excess baggage and end up with Clark and or Stevenson, the Suns have really made themselves a much more attractive destination for potential free agents. I can see a scenario in which McGrady might be lured to Phoenix, but Kobe, I doubt it. But if there's one sure thing in this world - Jerry Colangelo has extreme loathesome feelings towards the Lakers, and would love nothing more than to steal LA's living legend. One never knows what he might do to one-up the hated ones.
yeh a marion deal would be stretchin it...especially since these past few weeks are the first that I've heard Kobe to be considerin Phoenix... and the Gugliotta deal does make a lot more sense, for both teams...
I've heard of Kobe considering Phoenix, but I dismiss them quickly every time. He WILL SIGN WITH THE LAKERS. It's that simple. Dumping Marion is stupid unless it brings in a top tier superstar, but they just got rid of one of those, so i'm not sure they're gonna try anything like that. Even a trade for the 4 spot is dumb. Charlotte does have that pick, but Bernie Bickerstaff isn't about to trade his first pick ever, especially not one in such a potential filled draft.
They cannot dump Marion at this point. Once Amare gets back, him and Marion will do some things. Especially next year, Phoenix will be a lottery pick, a free agent signing away from being a top team in the West. Doesn't make sense to re-build at this point, this would be a terrible move.
I wouldn't call trading Marion, 'dumping him' You don't dump one of the league's best small forwards. Also, the only reason for Phoenix to trade Tom Gugliotta is to get under the luxury tax for THIS season. His contract expires after this '03-'04 season ends so trading for other players will actually reduce their amount of cap space for this summer. So in my mind the most reasonable of these deals is to aquire Keon Clark, who could actually help their basketball team. But I think a Cavs and Knicks pick is too steep a price to pay. Those are 2 shots at a top 3 pick that could also be used as trade bait for a bigger fish than Keon Clark.
I am not sure of they should trade Marion, but they need to do something. They are aweful. And the loss of Starbury means they don't really have true leader. Sure, Marion and Amare can score, but they someone to come in and lead the team. I am not sure if anyone there can step up to lead the team. I think clearing some salaries would help their cause for next season, coz this season is over for the Suns.

Shawn Marion is the Suns best forward by far, as much as I like Amare and his unlimited upside, Marion is the complete package. As Starman noted, unless Phoenix is getting an even bigger name in return, a trade for Marion is just pointless.
I have no idea how trading Marion would help bring in Kobe besides cap space. Having Marion for a teammate would be a reason for Kobe to considering joining Phoenix. If they want cap space, get rid of Googs
I think the Suns getting Kobe would be an awful move on the part of the Colangelos. Kobe hasn't proven himself to be the player everyone thinks he is by showing he cannot step up to the plate so to speak without a big man like Shaq at his side. He has never had to play without such an awesome big man and therefore I don't think he's really that great. All Kobe would do for the Suns would be to fill seats and score a lot of points. I think the Colangelos should stick to who they already have and try to go for the worst record in the league to insure them one of the top three spots in the lottery. Furthermore I dont think the Colangelos even know what they're doing.

This year Lakers should probably be doing more with the absence of Malone and Shaq because Payton is there. Last year when Shaq was hurt and Kobe had to lead by himself was with a lineup of Samaki Walker, Robert Horry, Fox, and Fisher. Yeah, I'm sure a lot of other superstar players in this league could have been successful with that lineup too. Kobe hasn't proven himself to be the player everyone thinks he is? Quit while your ahead, it's not worth my time trying to prove you why Kobe is a great player.
Clyde_Drexler22 The Lakers have won about 54% of their games without Shaq in the lineup. Kobe is the first option down the stretch of games and has the green light to close out quarters. Claiming he has not stepped up is a ridiculous claim.
