<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'>Monday, September 26, 2005By: Chrissy Mauck Mike Adams has been featured primarily at nickel, but will now start at safety. Head coach Mike Nolan announced on Monday that he?s shuffled the 49ers secondary by flipping safety Mike Rumph and cornerback Mike Adams. ?Rumph will compete at both corner positions and work in the slot where Mike Adams has been,? said Nolan. ?I want to get him back there and see what he can do. Since I?ve been here, he has not been at corner at all, so we are going to move him out there and get him out of safety and put Mike Adams back at safety.?The moves place both players back at their natural positions. Adams spent his college career at Delaware playing safety while Rumph worked at corner for his first three NFL seasons and during his college career at Miami. ?You want to get your players in the best situation you can,? said Nolan. ?I think we?ve done that to in a large majority of situations, on our line, I think Kwame Harris is great on the right side. I think Eric Heitmann at backup center does an excellent job when he gets called upon. On defense, I think the 3-4 is an excellent defense for what we?ve got in the front seven. From a coverage standpoint, that is where we are slacking in my opinion, which is pretty evident. We are not doing a very good job back there.?The 49ers rank last in the NFL in defending the pass. The defense also gave up two critical plays in 58 and 44-yard passes to Terry Glenn that led to fourth quarter touchdowns and the win for Dallas. Nolan was clear to point out that the position adjustments are not a reflection of the play of either players, but rather changes suited to improve the pass defense. ?I believe I probably had them out of position,? said Nolan. ?It?s hard to find the right guys for certain things especially when you are trying to make somebody do something that really isn?t natural. These players are not in the doghouse. It is a case of this is going to make us better. Those are two guys I want on this roster. I want to get them in the right position.?Rumph hasn?t played at corner since going on injured reserve last October, but he said he?s up for the challenge. ?I?m open to it because it is something that I?ve done and coach wants me to be somewhere that I?m comfortable,? said Rumph. ?It wasn?t that I wasn?t comfortable at safety, but it was a move we thought would be better for the defense. It?s definitely going to be different because it?s still a new defense, and one that I?ve never played corner in, but I?m always up for a challenge. Hopefully I can step back in and play at the level I was at before my injury.? Part of the scenario also relates to the injury situation. Starting cornerback Ahmed Plummer has a loose body floating around in his ankle that may require surgery.</div>ArticleThis move was influenced by Plummer possibly having surgery on his foot. I dont like that Adams way start at FS because he hasn't played that many games and he's not exactly good. Rumph also had more chances to make plays at FS but now will just have to cover alot more.
