It's the only option. This team will be lucky to become bowl eligible; they'll likely only end up with 3 or 4 wins. It's time to prepare for next year. Sit Teel, start Chris Paul-Etienne or DC Jefferson. Better to have them go through their lumps now while the team isn't doing anything. We can't afford to go into next season with any unproven QB's. CPE is my choice for now. I always felt next year's team had the potential to be very, very good, especially on offense. Brooks will be back, Britt will likely be back if he doesn't start doing what he did last year, and the offensive line will lose only one starter who will be replaced by stud current true frosh Art Forst. Actually, now that I think about, just start Forst now. The line could be pretty dominant next year. We have a massive stable of young wide outs to replace Underwood, so that wouldn't be of much concern to me. BUT, there was one BIG snagging point in the plan: we wouldn't have a proven QB. Now's the perfect time to remedy that. Give CPE the experience now, and we could have a deadly offense next year. Build for the future. Our best players are our young guys. Play them now.
Definitely not next year if my plan comes to fruition. Ideally, what I'd like to see happen is: Bump CPE to the starting role for this season, and make DC the back-up (meaning we burn his red-shirt). For next season, CPE starts, with DC as the back-up again. Savage red-shirts (now there's two years of eligibility difference between he and DC.) For 2010 and 2011, DC starts and Savage backs him up. For 2012 and 2013, Savage starts. So we get two years apiece from DC and Savage. Now, that probably won't happen. But, I think that CPE will definitely start next year. And then in 2010, CPE, DC, and Savage battle it out to see who's best. So, I think the earliest we can expect anything from Tom is 2010, with 2011 being more likely. One thing to note is that DC can play tight end. So, if Tom ends up being better than DC, we don't have to have him waste away on the bench. We can use him at TE fairly effectively. I've seen DC on campus multiple times, and he is HUGE. He's listed at 6'6" but he's more like 6'7". And I don't even want to guess his weight. He looks like a defensive end, not a quarterback. Scary.
