Tokyo’s Korakuen Hall was the stage for a very unexpected candidate for Upset of the Year, as Ring Magazine’s #1 super bantamweight and WBA titleholder Poonsawat Kratingdaenggym was ousted by former Japanese featherweight champion Ryol Li Lee. The 28-year old challenger, who was rated in the top 10 at 126 by the Bible of Boxing until the beginning of this year, was a heavy underdog making his first attempt at a world title shot, but designed an excellent fight plan and executed it admirably. Capitalizing on his height and reach advantage and frustrating the champ with his constant movement, Lee swept the cards to take a unanimous decision by scores of 115-114, 115-113, and 118-110. If the basis of boxing is to hit and not be hit, then the challenger did just that on Saturday, forcing the Thai beast to chase him throughout the twelve rounds while peppering him counter punches. Known as a defensive specialist with good footwork, Lee was an elusive target all night, circling the ring along the ropes dozens of times each round and showing finesse in escaping corners unscathed.
