"A much better effort, a crushingly similar result.

Gauging quality of play is really a loser's lament but that's all the Buffalo Sabres had to stand on after Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in the United Center.

The Sabres outshot the Hawks, 41-21, and controlled the defending Stanley Cup champions most of the night on their home rink. But that wasn't enough to prevent the Sabres' winless streak from extending to five games and the club's overall record from dropping to a sickly 1-4-1.

Patrick Sharp had two goals for the Hawks, both assisted by South Buffalo's Patrick Kane. He broke a 3-3 tie with the game-winner at 12:52 of the third period.

So what happened? The Buffalo power play was 0 for 6 despite 15 shots on goal and some strong offensive zone work. The defense made just enough mistakes, and Chicago goalie Marty Turco made 38 saves.

The Hawks tied it at 9:36 of the third as Dave Bolland streaked down the left wing, got outside Craig Rivet and beat Patrick Lalime, who was making his first start of the season, between the legs to make it 3-3. They won it as Sharp got his second of the night on a tap-in after a sensational back pass Tomas Kopecky delivered between his legs."

    DP He shoots, he scores!

Yeah, I'm going to say they didn't give enough effort, when the Hawks were falling over their passes left and right..
