Top-seeded Samantha Stosur was upset by Australian Jarmila Groth 6-2, 6-4 and second-seeded Shahar Peer lost to Lucie Safarova 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 Tuesday at the Brisbane International.

Groth broke Stosur's serve four times and saved three of the four break points she faced. She had seven aces in the second set and finished with nine.

Stosur, the French Open finalist, took a 4-1 lead in the second set. But she struggled with her serve as Groth reeled off five straight games to reach the quarterfinals.

Russian No. 5 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova also won her second-round match, beating Serbian Bojana Jovanovski 6-2, 7-5.

In other first-round matches, Roberta Vinci defeated American Christina McHale 6-2, 7-6 (2). Vinci was a late replacement for Fed Cup champion Flavia Pennetta, who withdrew because of illness.

In the men's draw, top-seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden closed a 6-2, 6-4 win over American qualifier Ryan Harrison with an ace, while former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis rallied from a set down to beat Frenchman Florent Serra 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.
