Stupidly stood pat at the trade deadline two years ago with a roster that just about had the best record in the league. Some more debth and playoff experience would've made a huge difference. I don't see him getting that close again unfortunately. Not unless some rostet miracles take place.
Are you trying to be me tonight.... You should just copy and paste everything I have said the past few seasons...LOL. We agree buddy.
They cant use the cap space excuse this summer, they have plenty of it if they really want to make a difference.
Struds, you make it seem like other GM's won't try to rip off Sather and it's easy to make deals. They had to give up a second, third and conditional second to get Clowe who had concussion issues. Other GM's aren't giving away players for free you know.
This could be one of the most interesting trade DL's in a long time for us. March 5th is a little over 8 weeks away. Maybe 20-25 games or so away. If we continue to struggle we will be sellers. And with so many free agents to be, it will be very interesting to see how Sather plays it. I happen to think Cally agrees to a new deal before the DL, but outside of him it is wide open. I would be very surprised if one of Girardi or MDZ wasn't dealt. I think 2 or 3 role player forwards could be dealt. It is going to be a very interesting time for us. If we are sellers I think this could be the most active trade DL we have had in many many years.
Responding to to the title of the thread, his biggest failure was destroying the first team he built here after a decade of lunacy. The team from two years ago should have been tweaked and dmen allowed to pinch more. The Nash and Gabby trades essentially ruined this team.
I disagree on the Gabby deal. 1. We couldn't afford his large cap hit this season, so he had to go. 2. Did I miss where Gabby was having a great season for CBJ? He wasn't doing much, and now is hurt for a long while. 3. I still have hope for Moore, and Dorsett is a solid 4th line guy. So I disagree with that being a bad deal. As for Nash, at the moment it looks like a bad deal. AA and Dubi could add some bang here. Plus we gave up a 1st and Erixon. And worst case we could have flipped AA or Dubi or Erixon in a different deal. So at this exact moment it doesn't look like a good deal. BUT there is still time on this one to be a good deal. It isn't like Nash is done. He just needs to get his sh*t together. I remain hopeful he will, and then that deal will be a very good one. So let's not close the book on that deal and act like the history is written and the careers are all done. Big picture, the jury is still out, even if it does look like a bad deal at this exact moment in time.
Respectfully disagree. What happened to Gabby this year in Columbus is unrelated to how he would have been here. Different time, place, situation. Nash is exactly what I said he was before the trade. Unless it drastically changes, I have been proven right. If the Nash trade was not made, Gabby's contract would not be an issue. Gabby put up 40 goals for us twice in 3 years, had a least 1 GW playoff goal, actually laid his body on the line much more than Nash, yet Nash has been revered here and Gabby was constantly criticized, then shown the door. Moore is awful. He's out of position more than any dman on this team, including DZ, yet no one ever says a thing about Moore. Dorsett is a useful 4th liner. I don't mind him, but that's what we get for Gabby? Sure the jury's still out. Five years down the road we'll be able to tell. So far it's awful, and there was no need for either deal. A bomber at the point, a little change in philosophy, and a few roster tweaks is all that was needed, not changing the entire essence of the team.
Maybe he would have also gotten hurt twice here, and maybe he wouldn't have gotten hurt twice here this season...who knows, Bottom line is he has done nothing for CBJ this season. Just the way it is. As for Moore, I think we all know he has struggled this season, but that doesn't mean he will never be anything. AV likes him a lot more than MDZ that's for sure. Not saying he is right or wrong, just saying he does. And you also need to factor in that we couldn't afford Gabby this season under the cap, and we would have had to do something with him. Plus, we could still re-sign Gabby this summer if we wanted to. So if he signs somewhere else and does well the next few seasons, that means nothing because we could bring him back OR we could have lost him to that other team he signs with anyway. So we disagree on the Gabby deal. I am not saying it was this grand slam HR, but I don't see any case that can be made where it was a terrible deal. He has done nothing with the CBJ this season. Has been hurt twice already. Is out for weeks more. We could still re-sign him this summer if we wanted to. And we couldn't afford him under the cap this season anyway.
Moore is dumb right now but it's really his second full season. So, he can still turn his crap play around. Nash, Stepan, Girardi and Boyle have no excuse for sucking.
The bottom line is this team could trade anyone to me besides kreider and Mcdonagh. Even Hank could go in the right deal as I've seen plenty of cups won without hall of fame goalies.
I don't want Hags traded. He opens up so much for others. Some players have flat out speed. Some are very quick. Hags has that rare combo of both. I'd have to be blown away to trade him.
Chuck and I (probably a few others), were practically screaming for more scoring at the trade deadline 2 years ago. For the record, I wanted Smyth from Edmonton ... Still wouldn't mind seeing him play with what little offense Sather has assembled at the Garden.
He's 38 years old and not close to what he once was. I'll pass. Would rather get younger, stronger, and faster.
All I meant was with what they have assembled right now. I'm not seriously saying they should make a move for him.
It's no big deal, I knew what you meant. This team definitely needs to get Stronger, faster and more physical on both sides of the ice.
