ahh but it appears to be so, straight from Anderson Silva's mouth.. he's going to retire after his current 6 fight contract is up.... and the MMA world will be left wondering 'what if..' <object width="464" height="392"><param name="movie" value="http://embed.break.com/NTg4NjAz"></param><embed src="http://embed.break.com/NTg4NjAz" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="464" height="392"></embed></object><br><font size=1><a href="http://view.break.com/588603">http://view.break.com/588603</a> - Watch more <a href="http://www.break.com/">free videos</a></font> I can only hope, as a fan of the sport, that sitting on the sidelines bores Anderson and he returns quickly.
You can't blame him. He's looking at guys like Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, and Matt Hughes, and seeing that after a while you start to decline. Six fights is two more years at which point he'll be 35, IIRC, and that is about the time a fighter should be retiring. Makes you wonder what might've been had he peaked five years ago.
It does really suck. Because even though he is retiring on top, what if he could still have 6 fights as to the top guy and then retire. But can't blame him at all. It is weird though that Dana White said earlier this summer that Silva was complaining of not fighting enough and that he wanted fights more often, and now he is planning on retiring soon.
I think Anderson wants to get his 6 fights in and retire hence his request to fight more. After watching him last night, I don't think he'll be leaving the sport, but maybe coaching more.
But guys like Chuck, Tito, and Hughes aren't as multi-dimensional as Silva, right? A lot of those guys falling off has been linked to their inability to adjust to the new styles of MMA. Silva is very smart and can win fights many different ways, no?
This is true. Silva is a BJJ black belt aside from being the best eight-points striker in MMA. I don't think its just about age, though. He also wants to concentrate on teaching at his new school in Florida. Plus can anyone even think of six worthy opponents for him, keeping in mind at least three must be middleweights?
