"Tyler Pitlick wanted to take the fast track to the National Hockey League, and as far as he was concerned, that wasn't through the halls of an NCAA school, it was by way of the Western Hockey League.

Next fall, the Edmonton Oilers' first pick in the second round -- 31st overall -- will play for the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Instead of playing 36 games with Minnesota State University, he'll play 72 with the Tigers.

Instead of cramming in classes between weekend tilts, he'll just study the game.

"I think it's going to be really good for me. I'll be able to show what I can do in the WHL," he said. "A big reason why I wanted to go was because they play more games. It's more of a pro style. Plus, I can just focus on hockey. I won't have to worry about school.

"It's tough to do school and hockey. There would be a couple of classes on Friday then a game that night, as well as practices. It just gets to be a lot.""
