"It was gut-check time at EverBank Field on a clear, bright, Sunday afternoon.

The Indianapolis Colts took one to the midsection. From 59 yards out.

With a sea of teal-attired fans in full throat and with inquisitive minds -- how would their Jaguars and beleaguered quarterback David Garrard respond after a pair of embarrassing losses? -- Jacksonville and Josh Scobee answered in resounding fashion.

The Jaguars kicked the Colts in the gut, using Scobee's powerful right leg. His club-record 59-yard field goal as time expired ended a drama-filled fourth quarter as well as the Colts' modest two-game winning streak.

"I've never been that excited after a kick in my life," Scobee said after his long-distance kick crept over the crossbar, igniting a celebration among the crowd of 63,111 and beating the Colts 31-28.

"I think that's the third time I've hit one over 50 to beat the Colts. Each one gets more and more fun."

Scobee has secured three of Jacksonville's five wins in the 19-game series with the Colts. Prior to Sunday, he nailed a 53-yarder in a 27-24 win in Indianapolis in 2004 and a 51-yarder in a 23-21 victory in Indy in '08.

"Heck of a kick," Colts coach Jim Caldwell said of Scobee's most recent game-winner.

Heck of a game, and one that came down to the wire because the Colts' normally-efficient offense turned over the ball twice within spitting distance of the Jaguars' goal line and the defense couldn't get off the field with the game's outcome in the balance.

After quarterback Peyton Manning pulled the Colts into a 28-28 tie with 48 seconds remaining with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Austin Collie, it was up to the defense.

    Make a stop, force overtime.

"That's what we get paid to do, make some stops," safety Antoine Bethea said. "You could see that last drive by our offense, how they went right down the field and scored. No telling what they could have done if we could have gotten them the ball again."

No telling, because it didn't happen.

Despite starting at his 23-yard line and with only 42 seconds left, Garrard carved up the Colts. He got a break when the Colts called timeout after an 8-yard run by Maurice Jones-Drew -- Caldwell said the Colts weren't going to allow the Jaguars to simply run out the clock -- then hit Tiquan Underwood for 6- and 22-yard completions for a first-and-10 at the Colts 41."
