<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">After flourishing in previous coach Rudy Tomjanovich's isolation system, it only stood to reason that Mobley's numbers would dip somehwat under new coach Jeff Van Gundy's more controlled inside-out offensive philosophy. Perhaps more than any teammate other than backcourt partner Steve Francis, Mobley faced the biggest adjustment in Van Gundy's new style. Rather than creating his own shots on a variety of slashes to the hoop and isolation plays, Mobley instead found his shot opportunites within the structure of the offense. As further illustration of his transformation in the offense, Mobley attempted a career-high 420 three-pointers, connecting on a career-best 164, while shooting just 217 free throws, the lowest total since his rookie season. By comparison, during the 2001-02 season in which he averaged a career-high 21.7 points per game, Mobley attempted 377 three-pointers and 314 free throws. While his points per game average was its lowest since his sophomore season (15.8), Mobley dished out a career-high 258 assists and became a key factor in the offense as one of Houston's main three-point threats along with Jim Jackson. </div> Link
I think Mobley's main contributions were from the 3 point line and defensively. He's able to lock down opposing SG's and open the floor up for Yao inside, but he rarely took the ball to the basket last season and I think his willingness to settle for the jump shot hurt his team. He's never been a particularly good passer either..
