With our local dismal media and the characters on this board every once in a while I have a reality check with myself... On July 4th 2015 LaMarcus announced he would be signing with the spurs. On that day if you told me that as of today we would still have the 2nd youngest team in the league, not missed the playoffs once and also finished as the 3 seed in the crazy tough Western Conference. Dame will have been 1st team All NBA and had finished 4th in the MVP voting... I would have been ecstatic.
REALITY: Blazers may have had healthiest team in NBA last season, full training camp with entire roster, the rest of west teams all dealt with major injury... and yet Blazers were only 3 games from being entirely out of playoffs, then got swept by a mediocre Pelicans team, so 3rd seed meant nothing. DEAD LAST in NBA in assists and fast break points. Dame and CJ will be 28 and 27 next season so they are what they are. Over half our salary cap dedicated to 2 players who do the same thing... and being over the luxury tax... and a GM unwilling to shake things up.
We had injuries too. And yes, 3 seed means something. Or do you think Warriors 3 titles mean nothing because of injuries to Kawhi, Kevin, Kyrie, and Chris?
Everyone gets upset in playoffs sometimes. Doesn't erase what we accomplished in regular season. Won toughest division, swept Thunder, won 13 in a row, swept Lakers per usual, went 2-1 vs Warriors. Matchups are everything in playoffs and maybe we would've done better if we played Thunder or Jazz per se.
No I would not have been happy because when Neil commits 120 million to roster a top 5 payroll the expectations change...
Dude, that means nothing... and to be honest, making the playoffs means nothing if you can’t win... you realize more teams make playoffs than not, right??
When the 3rd seed is 1 game different between the 4th, 5th and 6th seed and as you yourself said they were 3 games from being out of the playoffs, a normal "lol, the 3rd seed got swept" line doesn't really apply.
Thanks schilly. We all need to take a moment, pause and reflect on the past at times to get a clear picture of where you are at. Sometimes the path and the past is too easily forgotten.
Did you expect us to win it all last year? And yes more teams make it but we were 3rd in West. Have All NBA First Team point guard. There was a lot to celebrate last year. 13 game win streak was a highlight. We'll do better in playoffs next year.
Different expectations for different people, I suppose. Fuck a whole lot of this excitement over Dame's accolades or getting the 3 seed. This isn't a try-your-personal-best league, is it? It's about giving yourself a chance to win all of it. Or at least be ascending in that direction. You HAVE to be able to recognize when that ascension isn't going to happen and change something, like Toronto did, or go back to the drawing board, like the Clippers did...
There's a very distinct and realistic chance, that without a change, that we don't make the playoffs next season.
We went from 41 wins to 49 wins. Playoffs was disappointing but we are going in the right direction overall.
