I’m the first to admit that I am a jaded and cynical old(er) guy, and I don’t consider myself to be the most All American person in the world. But I do respect our service people and appreciate their sacrifice. I am a veteran and know first hand it isn’t the easiest job in the world. It’s nasty work but someone has to do it.

Yesterday I was in Jackson Wyoming with my wife. As is usual with most husbands, while she was inside shopping, I was outside waiting, gawking at other tourist geeks like myself. As I was standing on the boardwalk (very Old West) leaning against a railing, I saw a good looking kid, beautifully dressed in Marine dress blues (with two service stripes) virtually marching up my side of the street like he was on the parade ground. As he came abreast of me, he looked me in the eye, nodded and said, “Good afternoon sir, how are you today”? I was taken rather by surprise, but I said, “I’m fine, thank you.” And as he continued on, I remembered to say, “Thank you for your service. It is appreciated.” The kid paused just long enough to turn his head, look me in the eye (again) and say, “You’re worth it. Thank YOU.” And then he marched back on his way. His response absolutely dropped me. I choked up like I haven’t since the birth of my granddaughters. A few minutes later my wife finished her shopping (at least at that store) and came out to find me with tears still on my cheeks. When she asked what was wrong, I told her there was absolutely nothing wrong and shared the story with her. We were a fine pair, standing amidst the passing tourists, snuffling like babies. His response was so unexpected yet genuine. Just when I think this country is beyond redemption, the universe sends a messenger to prove otherwise. God bless this young man and all those just like him. I’m not sure we deserve them.

The set up was good but the punch line was terrible.

    "Thank you for your service"
Means so much to those that have served.

    "Your worth it"
Best come back I have heard in years.

    Thank you for sharing.
    Now where is my hankerchief.
