I think it is pretty clear that he doesn't believe he can get that much in free agency and it gives him another year to rehab.

Why not just give him the 3 million he's owed next year? Isn't that good enough for him?

If you had leverage like that would you not use it? I suspect that is what will happen if the Blazers believe they need the cap room.

He doesn't look like a worthless player:

Maybe he'll do the team a huge favor and opt out?

If he would opt out, then we are in a great position. I just don't know if any team is willing to pay him more than the 3 mil he is already guaranteed.

He would be a fool to "opt in" unless he thinks he has the best shot at winning with this team. Other than than, he would be getting at least 6-8 mil per on another team.

odds are if deron had any interest in us it would only be via sign/trade anyway, so 3 million in cap space doesn't necessarily change that much. we probably would have to give up something of value either way to secure deron - like babbitt/ewill or one of the 2 players we picked (if we do) in the lottery this year.

That would be awesome if true. I wouldn't mind giving NJ something in return in exchange for a "Max contract" type situation for Deron. Maybe Matthews, Babbit and our pick (that is if we get New Jersey's pick)

Williams is clearly going to exercise his option and force the Blazers to cut him.

Otherwise, he'd take the buyout. Simple as that. You take the buy-out, become a FA, and then you make up for the lost money via free agency. If he were planning to NOT exercise his option, that's free money right there.

He holds all the cards, and I have no doubt that if he doesn't accept a buy-out, then he will exercise his option. He's probably hoping we waive him, so he keeps the money, and is a FA.

Is he one of those guys who can't be traded unless he agrees to it because he'll lose his bird rights or something? Maybe the Blazers can find a team he wants to play for and offer that team a pick and some cash to take him of their hands?

What's going to happen is that NJ will wind up with the 2nd pick (just a guess) in the upcoming draft.

To this, if DWill would agree to come to Portland, let's do a sign and trade with NJ to accomplish two things:

We sign and trade for DWill, and they go ahead and give us their "top 3 protected pick" (instead of us waiting until next year).

    We ship them Batum.

I'd like to draft the best possible Center available with the NJ pick; sign DWill to a max; keep LA, Hickson, Matthews and Flynn.

Then pick the best possible (scoring) SF with our own number 1 pick.
