i don't know if alot of you know, but when Wayne Gretzky retired from the NHL every arena in the league retired his jersey and no players were alowed to wear his jersey number again. i was wondering do you guys think the NBA should have retired Jordan's number in every arena, and made sure no one else would wear the #23 again? i think Jordan had at least the same impact on the NBA as gretzky did for hockey.

I dont know about every team in the league retiring his number. I highly doubt that would ever happen. And about not allowing any other players to wear #23, there are already alot of players who are wearing the number (Lebron, J-Rich, JR Smith, Quentin Richardson, and others) so I highly doubt the league would allow that.

Ya...even with Lebron having the number I think of Jordon. No player in the NBA will bring to a team or the league for that matter that Jordon did.

Though I am a huge Jordan fan I disagree with this. Jordan brought the NBA game to another level, but so did Dr. J, Moses Malone, George Gervin, Magic Johnson, Wilt, etc when they came into the league. We have to learn that no matter how great a player was there will always be someone greater. The difference between the NBA and NHL is that before Gretzky the NHL never really had a face or person who represented the whole league. The NBA however has a new one every five years or less. The NBA also markets it’s players better, so we know all about these great names, and what they did even fans who did not live during the era these players played in.

    Jordan

Ok, let's clear something up:It is a known fact that Michael Jordan did more to influence basketball than any athlete has ever done for any sport. And honestly, I really don't think anyone will ever do what he did in any sport for a very, very long time.I'm not sayin we should start a cult and worship the number 23,but if the issue's brought up i would definitely retire his jersey in the NBA.Lebron and the other guys can wear it til they retire but after that it should be sacred.Seriously.

No thats stupid. In Hockey they have higher numbers too. Do you ever see any NBA players wear any numbers in the 90's? 80's? I don't think I can recall anyone even in the 60's. Jordon was the best basketball player of all time no doubt. But I think it is enoguh for just the Bulls to have his jersey retired. It would be weird in the Wachovia Center seeing Number 23 Jordon up there when he didnt do anything for the Sixers Org except give them trouble when he played against them. [IMG]

i think one the things that's kind of annoying now though, is the number of players rocking the #23, its alright for guys like lebron i guess who really is a superstar, but u have guys like darius miles and so on. it seems like every team now has at least one #23 jersey.

In every areana? No. The banners, jerseys, etc. hung in the areanas are for repersenting the city or team only. Hanging the jersey of MJ in every areana would be like he created the game of basketball and he is god or whatever. Jordan did revolutionize the game by putting his number in each areana would be too like hardcore.

Wow I never knew the NHL did that whole thing with the number 23, not letting the players wear the number ever again...thats pretty rediculous if you ask me.

I am all for retiring Jordan's number and hanging up a tribute to him in every arena but to restrict players from wearing number 23? That seems a bit extreme and many guys wouldn't like that. If all these NBA players are freaking out over having to wear a collar shirt for a couple hours I can't imagine their reactions when David Stern takes away their most identifying feature, their jersey number.

Just about every team(High School, AAU, NCAA, and NBA) has a #23, and when I see #23, I see that guy as the team's top player, and am disappointed when it isn't so. #23 personifies excellence, hard work, determination, and an uncanny knowelegde of the game. And Michael Jordan put all that there. Even Mike himself went back to #23 after sporting #24 for a bit.
It's like how point guards like to wear #11, as a homage to Isiah Thomas. Shooting guards should wear #23(if they can back it up).

Yes they did they lifted a Jordan half Wizard half Bulls jersey to the rafters during a Wizards/Heat game in Jordan’s final season.

I doubt the NBA would ever do that....David Stern, as much as I hate him, is smart enough to know the Marketing schemes. And while he doesnt tell people to wear the #23, trust me, he is very happy when he sees young wing players like Richardson, James, Smith etc wearing the #23 because it makes those players and the league that much easier to market to the masses. When people see those guys running and jumping with that 23 on their back they naturally think of the greatest for alot of people. And any salesman(which David Stern is) knows that if you can associate a lesser, newer product with an original better product, its good for business. Its indirect marketing....David Stern is to smart to give that up.

Bad idea. It would be a snub to a lot of other great players -- Wilt, Russell, Kareem, Magic, Larry, Oscar come to mind.

Jordan was a great player. Most influential, I don't know about that. Wilt, West, Russell changed the way the game was played. Magic and Bird in my opinion is the reason the NBA is so popular now. Before Jordan won championships Bird and Magic were having legendary showdowns in the finals.
