<div class="quote_poster">Quoting SI.com:</div><div class="quote_post">So what's so magical about six fouls? Sure, it's part of the mythology of the sport. Superstars like Wilt Chamberlain and Moses Malone were legendary for avoiding the six-foul limit, avoiding fouls altogether, as a matter of fact. You know how? They either stopped playing defense or were protected by referees who were -- still are -- reluctant to call a sixth foul on superstars. I don't blame the refs. I wouldn't want to send Duncan to the bench and watch the Spurs play down the stretch without him.</div> Full article: Frustrated By Foul Play In Phil Jackson's last book, he mentioned the idea of scrapping the six-foul limit in favor of a technical foul and the ball to the other team. Interesting idea since that'll decrease superstar treatment from the refs. Down the stretch of close games, a technical foul & the ball is already a huge punishment. What do you guys think?
Sounds good to me. It would be a dramatic change in the rules so I doubt the NBA goes to it, but it makes sense.
You're right. Might decrease star treatment. Kobe's scoring would dip a lot. ALOT. And how would Miami ever win games?

The fouls would still be called, but it would prevent star players from getting into foul trouble. It mentions Duncan and Amare both missing a large portion of the 3rd quarter, because both had 4 fouls with a lot of time left in the game. Officials are often reluctant to whistle a superstar player for their 6th foul. Basically the rule would allow for the best players to remain in the game without fear of fouling out. Kobe, Wade, etc. would still get to the line at a high rate.
But you said a Tech and he ball right, so every time its a shot, then you get the abll, so it could be up to 4 points every possion.
Not a good idea in my opinion. A technical foul(1 point) in this case is worth much less than a personal foul. More games would come to a grinding halt with all the fouling and motivates reckless defense. I'd rather have the foul limit increased to 7 or 8.

I don't like the idea. All though I'd love to have the best players on the floor and not have to see them on the bench due to foul trouble. I'd also not like to have to wait a extra half hour watching the game because of the increased fouls.

Actually, the fouls might reduce since refs are more likely to call fouls on subs off the bench than star players.
